avast can only scan your mail if you use a mail client that fetch you mail and download it to your comp… like outlook / outlook express / thunderbird /
when you go to hotmail and log in, that is called web mail… no antivirus is scanning web mail
web mail is scanned as normal webtraffic
microsoft is protecting all msn / hotmail / live mail accounts with Trend Micro antivirus…so it is already scanned
try to change your account password
