Help! After update WINXP keeps restarting endlessly!

Hello all and thanks for any help.

I have avast home edition installed on my win xp pro sp2 sys. This morning it informed a new database had been installed(normal). Then there was notification that I should restart to update, so I did.

Immediatly after that the desktop would not load. It just restarts continuously. I have tried my oem winxp pro cd, my slip streamed winxp pro w/ sp2 cd, those 6 winxp boot disks, and anything else I could think of. The sys just goā€™s to the desktop wall paper and hangs there, or more often just spontaniously restarts after the windows logo appears. I have spent some 12 hours just watching the machine restart. The desktop wall paper loads and the start button, the time and ā€œquick launchā€ are blacked out. The mouse goā€™s back and forth from busy to arrowā€¦endlessly.

The sys will not load start up or recovery from the CD. I canā€™t get into safe mode. The only option(with a hard boot) is ā€œstart windows normallyā€. Then it does the same thing again-restart and cycle through restart over and over. It is unlikey that I have a virus since I have run avast continuously for about three months and ran a full system scan just a day ago.

I have had NO problems whatsoever on my machine untill this incident. Please help me to get to my files-I am desperate!

Thank you all so much in advance!
Karen

You mean that your system restarts right when the Windows logo appears at the start of Windows boot??
What exactly does it mean, ā€œI canā€™t get info safe modeā€?

Hello-thank you so much for the response.

Yes the computer just kept restarting either as the windows logo appeared-or just as the desktop began to load. Now it has finally stopped restarting-and it is frozen with the the wall paper graphic and my files on the desktop showing-but the start button is blank. Seems none of the programs that normally run at startup have loaded. The mouse moves but is useless.

What I mean by not being to get into safe mode is deceiving I guess. I canā€™t get into any mode.

There is a point when you have the winxp cd in the drive (when windows isnā€™t starting normally) that allows you to go back to state when the machine was functioning normally, or to go into safe mode etc. Those options were not available-only ā€œrestart windows normallyā€ was available and of course it is not restarting normally. Sorry if I am explaining this badly. Iā€™m sure that is annoying. Iā€™ll do the best I can!

Thank you so much-
Karen

Just another update. I pressed the reset button again-and it is restarting over and over as it had before. It gets just past the windows logo-to the ā€œwelcomeā€ screen and the five windows starting musical notesā€¦then restarts itself. Depressing.

And when you just press F8 before the boot (without WinXP CD in drive) - does the usual menu (having the ā€œSafe modeā€ option) appear?

I got the same problem. Iā€™m also using Windows XP SP2 with all of the latest service packs/patches etc. I had to restore my PC to a previous restore point, through Safe Mode, in order to get it working again.

I have tried upgrading a couple of times now, but cannot get it to work.

I have emailed the Technical Support team but have not received any help as yet.

Hello Igor and I am so grateful for your help here. Thank you.

Yes I have just now tried again to power on the machine and get into safe mode. What happens is-the screen appears with the options (safe mode and restore to an earlier point). But I am unable to choose any of them with the mouse. It does not let me use the arrows to move to safe mode, it stays on the option at the bottom of ā€œstart windows normallyā€. I have never had this problem before. In the past I was able get into safe mode or restore to an earlier point when the machine was functioning normally.

LionRampant, Iā€™m glad to know it is not just me with this problem. Iā€™m happy you were able to get your system working again.

Iā€™m afraid that I am about to lose everything here.

Igor-do you happen to know of any boot utility that I can download (from the mac I am on now) to help me to get into those options in order to restore to an earlier point? I am desperate and will try anything before I am just forced to reformat and lose all my work.

Thank you so much for your help.
Karen ???

Hello Igor-

After fussing around in the bios I found that I had the usb legacy support disabled! I think when I enabled it I could get into my desktop again. Oh DUH sometimes it is the most simple things that answer serious problems!

Thank you so much for the help!

Of course I have a multitude of problems now-like Internet Explorer not working etcā€¦but at least its all manageable.

Is there any other Avast version I can use now?

Iā€™m grateful for the help, thank you again!

So has the update problem been resolved? Does anyone have a working version of the latest program update?

From the version history no update has been made since the problems were experienced and I cannot find a post which offers a definitive fix.

I am currently running the previous version without problem and do not intend to update it unless I am sure this problem has been resolved.

I am disappointed at the lack of information being offered on this from the moderators. If there is a definitive fix, can you not post this somewere obvious as I am sure we are only the tip of the iceberg for users being affected by this update.

Love the program, and have got all my friends and family running it - but am a bit worried that this is not receiving enough attention.

Please help!

LionRampant, there were a few reports about the problem (I believe 3 or 4 on this forum) - but millions of people are using the new version without any problems.

From the reports, it really looks like an avast! problem. I am sure it will be addressed within a few days (unfortunatelly, the respective developpers have left for US for a few weeks, so it may take slightly longer than under normal condition).

Some operational system restarts could be solved by deleting the file \setup\reboot.txt
