Hey all,
So After an update to the free av, 2 days ago, I started getting odd stuttering in some of the games I was playing. It had never happened before. I figured it would work itself out. It did not. I looked in task manager and saw Avast Service was using all of the remaining cpu on a regular basis (anywhere from 30%-90% depending on other processes). I also watched the lag spikes in the games correlate to the absurd bottlenecking occurring with the avast service consuming system resources.
As a tech-ish person I did a few things:
1: I attempted to terminate the process to no avail. As it is and there is a topic about it, I tried going to Settings>Troubleshooting>[uncheck Enable Self Protection] to no avail, I cant terminate the process, and, as such, can not make a dump file therefrom.
As they say: Have you tried turning it off and back on again, but I cant turn it off…it just keeps persisting.
2: updated my drivers. I did so with a nice restart afterwards, and avast is still freaking out.
3: made sure it wasnt caught in an odd update loop. It was not.
4: ensured no scan was going on.
5: RAN a scan to see if it would dislodge the process… but nope.
I’m unsure what to do here. I loke avast, it’s never caused any problems and has helped keep me safe. It also has an amazing name!
Is there anything I can do to try to diagnose whats going on without having to do a clean install?
Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: just timed the time it takes from right clicking tile icon to when menu displays, and out of 5 tests average time was 23 seconds and another 50 seconds to open UI. I can’t even open a web page while its trying this as Avast service is eating resources. During periods of idle, my streaming is even taking a hit. youtube and netflix are stuttering now
UPDATE 2: I’m doing an uninstall. It was literally hogging 80-90% prohibiting any computer use. The uninstall had been running for like 20 minutes because Avast Services was flipping out. I downloaded new installer and disconnected from the web. This is absurd! Hopefully a clean install will help!
UPDATE 3: After fresh install im back to 6%-10% cpu usage. No idea what happened. this was ridiculous D:
