Updated AVAST two days ago on 2 XP computers that are completely up to date with the Microsoft Windows update site. Within minutes of uploading the AVAST update, two of the computers in my house started to bog down, max out CPU usage and lock up. After hard restarts, neither computer will boot! Power applies for 2-3 seconds then turns off. Managed to get one of the computers restarted momentarily and watched CPU usage climb to 100% again with task manager open. The culprit was ashserv.exe. After 5 minutes of operation, computer locked up again and will not restart. I have 2 other XP systems on my network and have disabled AVAST on both until problem is solved or until I can find another virus protection program. Please help!
Hi bwbwjkb!
How long have you been using avast! already?
Which other security software do you use? (antivirus, antispyware, firewall,…)
Which was your previous antivirus software?
kind regards

How long have you been using avast! already?
For several years
Which other security software do you use? (antivirus, antispyware, firewall,…)
AVAST has been our primary tool. Anything else running would be integrated into windows operating system (Firewall, Defender maybe?). Not sure how to check…
Which was your previous antivirus software?
Used to use Norton but that was several hard drive reformats ago or never depending on the system.
I do have besecure internet protection service loaded too which has its own firewall protection.
I’m not sure about if there can be a conflict between avast! and the besecure internet protection, but possibly a clean installation of avast! could help…
Here’s a guide how to do that from Tech:
I’ll check further if I can find out something about the besecure internet protection…
does this service include the antivirus software Mc Afee? → do you use the “Internet filter” or the “All-in-one security suite” - overview here: http://www.bsafehome.com/Products/Products.aspx
