A few days ago, while running a Boot-Time Scan with Avast Home, the virus Win32:Gator-H [trj] was found in the file hiberfil.sys ( C:\hiberfil.sys )
I tried to repair it, (though i have no vrdb of it with other data) and then move it to chest, but the error came up:
File C:\hiberfil.sys is infected by Win32:Gator-H [trj], Repair: Error 42060 {The file was not repaired.}, Move to chest: Error 0xC0000043 {A file cannot be opened because the share access flags are incompatible.}, Move to chest: Error 0xC0000043 {A file cannot be opened because the share access flags are incompatible.}
(i copied and pasted this from aswBoot.txt)
I would like to know what this virus is, what file it may have came from, what file it is now, and how to remove it/move to chest.
EDIT: if any system information is needed to help, please reply in a request?
Thanks
(and, please note, i have a slow download speed [dial-up])
Well, the file looks like it was included in the hibernation file for windows.
It’s normal that you can’t repair a file like this, since it’s a system file that is needed for windows hibernation.
You can probably delete the file though, and windows will re-create it when it goes into hibernation the next time (if it ever does).
If after you delete the file, the virus shows up again, you might try another boot-time scan to make sure the file is completely removed, otherwise it’s likely that you are safe.
I would try to delete the file, except for the problem that i cannot find it. It showed up as a file on boot scan, i’m sure the file exists, but i can find no way to bring up the file to delete it. I’ve tried looking manually (no success) and with a windows search(no success) Don’t really know how to find the file at this point.
I also do not know where the virus came from, and have had it for a while, though with no noticible system problems.
Didn’t you delete the file with avast?
Are you seeing hidden\system files into Windows Explorer?
During the boot time scan, i tried to move it to chest, but it said the shared access flags are incompatible. And, yes i have show hidden files/folders on.
The file should be too big for the Chest, but it should be let there after the moving to Chest command failed…
