I can’t understand your actual situation:
Are you in a clean computer or you don’t know? Is avast installed?
Can you guess what have make avast to stop? If it was a virus, do you have its name or the path of the infected file?

avast is installed but something is stoping it running no the pc isnt clean as in i havent reinstalled windows as i dont want to lose the files and programs that are on it
i have no clue whats stoping avast from running so i dont know what it is thats stoping it running

So, avast is installed but not a provider is running, there is a red cross over the ‘a’ blue icon?
Do you have (or had in the past) any other antivirus in this computer?

Just for your information, overinstallation can solve the problem and you won’t lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc. Just choose ‘Repair’ installation of Windows and install ‘over’ the old installation.

But if you could make a backup for your data, it is advised to format and do a clean installation, when needed. I’m not saying that you need to do so, just for you to know as a last solution for your problem. I think we must try other ways to get your computer clean and working. I suggest:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows ME or Windows XP. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it’s not available in Windows 2k. After boot you can enable System Restore again after step 3).

  2. Clean your temporary files. You can use CleanUp or the Windows Advanced Care features for that.

  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting).

  4. It will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware. Some users recommend SUPERantispyware, Spyware Terminator and/or a-squared (take care about false positives).
If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.

  5. If you still detecting any strange behavior or even you’re sure you’re not clean, maybe it will be good to test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest AVG, Panda and/or F-Secure BlackLight.

  6. After you’re clean, use the immunization of SpywareBlaster or, which is better, the Windows Advanced Care features of spyware/adware cleaning and removal.

i think i have the name of the worm it’s ~1.exe file identified as l-worm/bagle.TH

If avast isn’t running and you have a begle (beagle) variant designed to kill AVs and may also be hidden by a rootkit.

The two anti-rootkits above have had reasonable succes at finding this rootkit, if that is what it is.
