After the automatic program update to ver. 4.1.389, my laptop will not boot, even into safe mode. It hangs and just cycles through the startup options with a coundown timer. Alienware Sentia 1.4 Centrino, Win XP Pro w/all updates current. I don’t have a floppy drive, so I can’t even use an old recovery disk. Somebody PLEASE help!
Are you getting a BSOD Message that Aavmker4.sys is causing the system not to load up? If so try shutting the laptop down manually and do a cold boot.
I received that message on this 2k machine but after tracking down my problem it was an issue with Abtrusion Protector. Once I was able to get this machine up and going I had to make changes to Abtrusion Protector to allow the 2 files one was Aavmker4.sys the other not real sure then rebooted.
Yours may be a differnet situation but wanted yourself to hear what I had done to get the computer up and going again.

:oi had to go to safe mode to remove this program Not what expected
I too have a problem, just starting today attributable to AAVMKER4.sys. I have a Dell Dinesion desktop running XP home. I downloaded the SP2 updates about 10 days ago, but otherwise have not added any software or hardware. Today, after using the computer in the morning, I turned it on later in the day and got the following Blue Screen message (with a little of the content lost to bad handwriting and a lot left off as instructions on how to fix the problem):
AAVMKER4.sys has caused a page fault in non paged area
STOP: 0X00000050 (0xCIB78457, 0x00000000, 0XFC8BBC3F, 0x00000000)
AAVMKER4.SYS address FC8BBC3f base at FC8BA000
It repeated several times, I eventually was able to reboot in safe mode, and had to do a System Restore to yesterday, which allowed me to get back on and run a virus scan and disk check and no problems were found. Microsoft’s tech support knowledge base references a couple of similar problems, but one is a Windows NT issue and one is strictly related to folks running software from stardock.com. (kb873159) There is also the generic information about a STOP 0xoooooo50 error message, which implies it is usually new hardware or software.
Please advise. Could there be a bug in this week’s update?

For all those that have problems with AAVMKER4.sys go here:

and do as PK’s suggested… send him latest Minidumps from your \Windows\Minidump folder…
DMCMD, as S.Z.Craftec suggested, please send us the minidumps (e.g. to kurtin@asw.cz).
Thanks.
Dobry den.
I eventually noticed the thread on “BSOD” but at first had not known what that meant. It did not actually answer my question, either. I just sent the minidumps to PK, but I’m not sure they will help. The first I learned of minidumps was looking through the forum messages yesterday–so I activated the process in my software, but after my problem had occured.
I apologize for being so ignorant about this stuff. The really terrific thing about Avast! is that it just works. I don’t have to fuss with it or pay attention to it, it’s just always there, doing it’s job, protecting me, keeping itself up to date, not screwing up my computer like some other software. That means that you guys do a fantastic job of programming the software to fit the many different platforms it has to run on, and allow it to be so invisible.
So, with Avast! working nicely without my involvement, I haven’t learned about some of the useful things to do to detect or prevent problems or some of the geek lingo used on the forum.
Thanks for great software.

I am now able to reliably boot my computer, but I had a message from Zone Alarm that something with webshield was off (I was in a hurry and didn’t make a note of exactly what was wrong.) I have noticed other messages referencing update 4.6.652 having problems with Zone Alarm, although most of these have involved Internet Explorer, which I don’t use. I use Mozilla for both browsing and mail.
Today, I have an error message that says I can’t log onto my e-mail server via Mozilla, and the message says "can’t log onto POP3 mail server. (mail server) responds: (then no furhter information provided.
Are we getting close to having these pesky problems worked out? Any idea what would have affected my e-mail access?
I’m sure you’re real busy, but I’m anxious to get things settled again and not have to mess with my computer all the time.
Thanks for your help.
