HELP-Netscape 7.0 E-mail Set-Up

In recently acquiring Avast Home version 4.1, and installing it and enabling the e-mail protection, I was happy to report that it was scanning “inbound mail” per protocol, but when I tried to “send” an e-mail, I couldn’t. I don’t recall the “error message” I received, as I was in a state of panic, however; I went into the “e-mail wizard” and "removed the “e-mail component” of the program, which I assumed would return everything back to normal (I never said I was to bright), in any event, that wasn’t the case. Not remembering all my previous settings I had to call SBC and have them help me get back to where I was–an hour and a half later I was up and running again.

I would like to only “scan inbound mail,” is that possible with Netscape 7.X, and how do I do it without creating havoc again? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
ethunter

Never panic. That normally only makes things worse  Avast and Netscape mail work fine together. Setup the email as your mail provider instructs you, then run the mail protection wizzard. I do not advise to disable scanning outbound mail. If, for whatever reason, your system gets infected, the scanning of outbound mail may alert you.

Eddy,

Pardon my ignorance, but I did that, and did something wrong . . .?

What is the status at this point? You have setup the mail as instructed by your mail provider and it works? Then you ran the mail protection wizzard of Avast? Are you using pop/smtp mail or webbased mail?

Eddy,

I returned everything (with some effort) to the way it was; I’m running smtpt/pop, and am nervous about running the wizrd again, until I have found out what I did wrong the first time. I am being asked for a password now, which was never the case in the past–I had to have SBC give me a “new password” as I couldn’t remember the old one.

What exactly is asking for the pw? I think it is your mail provider. Am I right?

Yes, I assume that happened because of “new configurations”, and then changing them back . . . I’m sure that is a matter of unchecking a box… Anyway, when I set it up the firt time, I could receive e-mail, I just couldn’t send . . . . :-\

Ok, I tried running the wizard again, in fact about “4 times” and nothing happened! Rebooted etc., but nada, zilcho, zippo . . . now I’m really stumped . . . anybodY?

Well, I went back to wizard and this time I did a “manual” install, and only “filtered inbound” e-mail, and everything seems to be working ok; will probably enable the “outgoing” as I get more familiar with Avast. By the way, Avast found several “malicious files” that my previous AV software missed (McAfee).

Thanks Eddy for your input . . .
