I’ve had Avastantivirus Free for 5 years then my previous download 7 months ago of version 5 totally messed up PC hanging, freezing, etc. that I had to uninstall and reinstall 4.8.
I have XP SP2 Media Edition, Windows Firewall, Malwarebytes (free version), Spywareblaster (free), CCleaner (free), and 2GB RAM. I read internet posts that Power DVD (which I have) can conflict with Avast? Is this true?
When I got my PC, it had McAfee pre-installed which I uninstalled and then Comcast (my ISP) put Norton on my machine without my permission which I also uninstalled before first trying Avast.
How many versions of Avast 5 are there now? I only want to try installing a non-beta version please because of the problems I had with the first attempt to upgrade to version 5.0.
I prefer not to use the update pop-up box Avast 4.8 keeps employing so
can someone please post EASY instructions for the best way to do a clean install by uninstalling 4.8 first, then downloading the best version of 5 for XP?
I have a license key for 4.8 from 04/12/10 so can I use that or do I have to get a new one first? And should I delete all the things in the Chest before uninstalling version 4.8?
Also, I read that doing a “custom” install of version 5.0.667 is the best way to go and not to install P2P and Behavior Shield. What is P2P anyway?
I am NOT technical so please give clear easy instructions, like if I’m supposed to “save” something I download, save it to where, my desktop? Yep, that’s how dumb I am about PC stuff! Thanks so much for any help!
*PS: if version 5 still causes problems, can anyone suggest a different free AV as good as Avast 4.8 was? I’ve loved Avast but can’t get into all these technical fixes because I’m just not technical (hey, I’m just an artist, and my brain isn’t wired for this type of thing).
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.
How long will 4.8 be supported, can someone from Avast answer this please? And is it still updated or not?
I can’t go through this upgrade again, I spent way too many hours trying to fix my PC after the first version 5. Avast has big problems with this new version 5 (all of them) so why don’t they just admit it? Tghese aren’t isoltaed incidfents, people all over the internet (not just here) are reporting the same issues even with the latest release. I can’t understand anyone having to go into safe mode and jump through all these technical hoops over and over to get any version of 5 to work. It crashed my PC badly and one hellish experience was enough.
I’m getting a Mac soon so I can say good-bye to all this nightmarish virus crap on PC’s. Sp please, will an Avast tech answer how long 4.8 will be supported? Thanks for everyone’s help but I can’t face more lost time trying to fix issues with 5 and i’m too afraid to download it now.
4.8 is dead end. They keep extending it here and there. It was supposed to end 1st of this year for awhile, but it still lives. One thing for sure, it won’t be much longer at all.
About 50% of the people who post problems with their Avast!5, say the same thing. To debunk your erroneous theory, search for problems with Avast! 4. You will find many. Because you looked for problems. People with no troubles rarely post their lack of problems. Or look for any problems. You never had any probs with ver. 4, so you never looked. If version5 had more “bugs” than 4, Avast! user base (which depends on word-of-mouth adv. more than anything) would be shrinking, not growing.
If you need to switch vendors because of this, ok. But all AV’s have these type of problems, so you will switch again sooner or later. Think to hide on a MAC? You are just in time for MAC’s increased market share, so the malware will not be far behind you, contrary to the “MACs are immune” propoganda
Give me a break! Macs will never be as vulnerable as PC’s no matter their market share because Windows (all versions) are a beta version from day one and remain beta fforever because the OS is badly written in the first place with tons of vulnerabilites and zillions of constant updates. Defending Windows is a joke.
And I’m getting a Mac for GRAPHICS reasons because I’m an artist and Macs are far better for that…but also for their superior OS. I’m sure it’s happened, but of the hundreds of people I know with Macs, not ONE has ever had a virus, trojan, malware, etc., etc., etc., ever.
I love Avast 4 but simply am NOT technical enough to deal with the problems of upgrading to a what seems to be a very buggy version. I’m so stupid about this that I really don’t know what it means when advised to “reboot”…does that mean shut the PC down and restart? Or just log off and log back in? And save to where, the desktop? Pathetic, I admit it. I’ll gladly PAY for an AV and it’s not the “free” that’s important, it’s no headaches that’s important.
Someone posted the 4.8 UNINSTALL to “save” but I read there’s also a “clean up tool” so can someone please post that tool also so I can try one last time to do a clean install? And if I have to go into safe mode, do I choose “with networking” or what? Again, see how not technical I am?
So Avast 4.8 is dead? Then why is it still working?
I will just drop the info here and move on. lol
Go here for the uninstall utility. Instructions are also located here. http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Not dead, “dead-end”, as in soon. It will get no more virus definition updates after that, and every passing day after that hour it will simply be much wasted space as time goes by.
If I may say so, Miss, you sound an ideal Mac user, overall.
Me and my friends never had malware (virus, trojan, worm, etc.) on Windows, so in that case it is also secure as it also depends on the user sitting in front of the computer. MAC also had vulnerabilities, but not that much were discovered yet. I would not say, that Windows is badly written. Anyhow getting MAC for Graphics is a good decision. And yes, reboot means to shutdown and restart the computer.
Since when did this thread go into Mac vs Windows PC mode ?
I loved this tho:
