Help! Scheduled Boot time scan now my PC won't Boot

Ok, I’ve scheduled for a boot time scan and clicked restart. When the screen went blank and went it restarted WIN XP logo will appear and then a brief blue screen then black which asks me to choose whether to start on SAFE MODE etc etc… But no matter what I choose, it doesn’t work!

I’m quite a computer dumbo so I really need help! Anyone?

Did you try choosing the “Boot with last known good configuration” option that should be listed when you are asked about Safe Mode?? (Not sure of the exact wording but if you see it as an option you’ll recognize it). Might be worth a try if you haven’t . . . .

I’ve had, it restarts and I end up back on that screen where it asks me if I want to got on Safe Mode, etc etc. I’ve tried every option ??? ???

What was your boot time scan settings? Avast, at least in 4.8 haven’t tried it yet in 5, gives you two options that lets you choose how Avast handles System and non-System files. How did you have it set to deal with System files? Was it “Put in Chest”, “Delete”, or “Ignore”?

I don’t think the boot time scan was performed…

Any other antivirus present in this computer?
And in the past?

No, it’s newly formatted.

Did you install the avast 4.8 or 5.0? Which exactly build (5.0.462)?
Any other security program that could interfere?
Was you updating Windows while trying to install avast in the same boot (session)?
Do you have Windows CD/DVD to perform a system restore?

Hi,

  1. You will need your windows xp cd rom & boot off cd drive & choose repair of windows on the blue setup screen. A brief BSOD is not good as auto reboot can be disabled later when you get the operating system working! as you are in a continuous reboot loop and you cannot access safe mode? OR TRY OPTION 2 BELOW.

  2. As you switch on your computer try hitting F8 repeatingly and get to black options screen. try accessing safe mode or last known configration and select the earliest restore place. If you try safe mode only without networking log on as default administrator NO PASSWORD hit enter if you get desktop (all black background) click on start and under system tools go to system restore and select the earliest restore point the first one when you installed windows it should be there & reboot normally.

I can’t access Safe Mode so I guess I will have to try the 1st option. However, my laptop has no CD drive so how can I boot from CD?

Hi,
That is very odd having a laptop without a CD Drive!!!. I think you may have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive, option with the Function keys . MAYBE F12? or other function key. :o

What make of laptop do you have so i can google up some info about it? If you have a DVD drive the cd rom should still read from it! if it is a combination drive? as in my ibm t22 can read DVD & read cd roms and burn both as well.

It’s most probably a netbook…

it is a netbook

anyway, I’ve read somewhere netbooks use bootable USBs. How do I do that ??? ???

This got me so lost. help anyone? ???

Also, will making my USB bootable render it unusable as storage in the future? I mean can I format it after using it as a bootable USB and then use it as storage again?

Of course you can format it later on.
But it would be wiser to leave it as an emergency device.
Why don’t buy a new one - they’re not that expensive anymore.
