ok i had free avast and upgraded to paid internet security - downloaded and entered the licence as instructed now the firewall wont do a thing and there is no start stop etc button and the virus definitions update gets to the end then says error must terminate and closes- so i thought i would click the fix now button on the summary page and it does nothing- ive looked for the past week for answers and im not great at computers so cant do that delete file etc so whats goin on and what do i do? its a waste of money if it dont work!
try avast repair and reboot
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If the avast repair doesn’t work - I would suggest a clean install of AIS:

Download the latest version of avast AIS, 6.0.1289 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

- Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
