Help with crashing

While I am doing a thoroough scan of my computer, my system will crash and reboot. What can I do to stop this? or what is casuing it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Windows xp sp2
512 ram
AMD 64 3000 cpu.

Let me know if any other inof is needed.

Hi,

  • check the temperature of CPU/system right after the crash (in BIOS or with monitoring tool)
  • does this also happen when you do the scan in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 when booting) ?
  • is AMD 64 = 64-Bit WIN ?
Not sure if this will work properly, try and use the BoardSEARCH

rytrunkie,

Although such reboots can be caused by overheating, it can also be caused by conflicts between Win SP2 and some malware such as a common one found in many computers…TVMedia.

Apparently, there is a serious conflict between the upgraded security features of SP2 and TV Media which causes the system to crash. If the system is set to reboot after a crash (most are), the computer will be locked in a cycle of rebooting and crashing.

Microsoft has developed a patch to prevent this problem, which must be installed prior to the SP2 installation. More information on this issue, the solution to the reboot, crash cycle, and a link to the patch are all available in the MS knowledgebase article .

This may not be what is causing your reboot, but I would start by scanning my (your) computer for malware with Adaware or Spybot S and D. Also, lower the sensitivity of the Avast scan to a mid range and do not scan archives at first. See if you can get the scan to complete. Then add the “archives” and rescan. If all goes well, then move the “sensitivity slider” up a bit. Some systems cannot take the “high thorough setting”.

Good luck.

I have set it on the lower scan level and there is no crash. It is only when I do the thorough scan it reboots. I have tried scanning for malware with Spy Sweeper and also Adaware. Thanks

Do you think (according to the scan progress) that the reboot might occur always when scanning the same file or folder?
Do you have the scanning of archives turned on or off during the thorough scan? (If it’s on - does it change anything if you turn it off?)

Igor, won’t it help if the user go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, he/she can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report).

Well, yes, I was just trying to get some more info first
