Help with mail scanner

Hi!

I have just started using Avast (before that i used AVG), and everything is working fine except for the Outlook mail scanner. When i start Windows a warning pops up:

avast! will not be able to protect outgoing mail (smtp protocol). Error: 10048

Port 25 is already in use, specify another port value (see section ‘Cooperation with other software’ in ‘Manual Setting of Mail Protection’ in help).

Now, I’ve already tried reading the mentioned section in help, but frankly i don’t understand anything it says.

Can anybody help me?

Port 25 is already in use, specify another port value (see section 'Cooperation with other software' in 'Manual Setting of Mail Protection' in help).

It is not too hard. Sending email (SMTP protocol) uses Port 25 as a default. If it is being used by another program, then you need to change the ports used in OE and within the Avast .ini file

Open up OE and go to Tools, Accounts.
Find your email account username and click on Properties.
Then go to the Advanced tab. Reset port 25 to 26 and port 110 to 111.

Now we need to change the Avast .ini file which you will find by going into the Programs folder/Avast/Data and find the .ini file

Open up the file by clicking on it. Within the file you will find the ports 25 and 110 listed. Change them to 26 and 111 respectively. Save the file and exit the whole mess. ;D

Try the email again. This “normally” solves your problem.

Good luck.

First of all, i don 't use OE, i use Microsoft Outlook from the office pack if that changes anything…

Second: I’ve tried what you said, but i can only find port 25 (and changed it to 26) i the .ini file. When i change the values in Outlook i can’t send mail.

The Ko

MS Outlook should still have an Accounts menu in Tools.

If Avast is installed, then there has to be an entry within the .ini for POP and SMTP ports.

It might start with Default…then SMTP port 25 or something like that.

Did you find the .ini file at all???

Yes, i did find the .ini file, but i could find SMTPport=25 (which i changed to =26), POP isn’t written anywhere in the file, neither is the value 110 or 111.

I changed the accounts as you said.

Insert this line to the ini file under [MailScanner]:
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:26

But leave SMTP port set to 25 in Outlook account, because plugin for Office Outlook does not use the generic mail scanner.

Also keep SMTPport=25.

Thanks a lot to both of you. That last thing helped me and now everything’s working. Thanks!

I started using avast! today and have also been getting the,

“avast! will not be able to protect outgoing mail (SMTP protocal)”

Error: 10048

I’m not using Microsoft Outlook Express, but Mozilla Thunderbird for my email. Any solution?

Welcome to the Forums

Forget my last message. I tried the modification to the .ini file and it worked. Thanks everyone.

:-\ Have tried amending ports but it either won’t send or receive. Is it something to do with the fact that there are no ports mentioned in the ini file? If so what should I add?

Can you read the ‘setting’ link on my signature?
It could give you the way to solve this… I hope…

 1. Yes thanks. I’ve used the link and read the content. I don’t have time to try it now but will do so shortly. I will let you know how I get on.

??? Forgot to add, could it be anything to do with my pop up killer?

Well, it will be more probably your spam killer (not the pop up)… Do you use any?

Yes, I use the latest version of Incredimail which automatically junks unauthorised e mail.

Incredimail is a pop3 e-mail program and needs to be configured the same way as OutlookExpress.
Use the Mail Protection Wizzard to set up your e-mail

Thanks for that Bob, but it is configured the same as Outlook Express. Iwill look through the INI settings as suggested previously.

Perhaps I didn’t explain myself very well. The problem is with port 110 which appears to be in use by something else so Avast won’t scan incoming mail. Outlook doesn’t like ports 26 and 111 although Incredimail doesn’t seem to have a problem.
Sorry for any confusion.

You mean Full Outlook (MS Outlook) or Outlook Express?

The first one should be let on 110 and you can configure avast4.ini file to scan it. See ‘setting’ on my signature.
But which program is using 110? Probably the spam killer, do you use any?
Outlook uses its own avast plugin and not the mail scanner.

Outlook Express could be at other port than 110.
