Help with major problems

I’m hoping someone can help me out. Please excuse my lack of expertise. I’m kind of ignorant when it comes to technical stuff.

I contracted some kind of trojan a couple of weeks back. When I ran Hijack This, it picked it up. But upon running Hijack This again, the problem would still be present. The trojan (or whatever it was) was causing unwanted pop ups, most of them informing me that my computer was infected, and asking that I download this or that (I never did download any of this stuff, of course).

I ran Adaware and Spybot several times after finding I couldn’t remove the trojan with Hijack This. Both programs would always find several problems. I had the distinct feeling that these things were regenerating themselves after every removal.

Someone recommended Avast to me, so I downloaded it, figuring it couldn’t hurt.

I downloaded 4.6 and installed it, but when I rebooted I found that my computer (running Windows ME) was pretty messed up. The graphics looked funny and covered only a small rectangle within the screen, and I had no cursor.

I rebooted in safe mode and ran Avast. It found a trojan, but when I tried to remove it, I received an error message. I rebooted in safe mode again and uninstalled Avast, thinking maybe Avast had done more harm than the trojan. But the problem has persisted.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Does anyone have any advice? Needless to say, I’m pretty frustrated by this.

TIA.

You could try an/some on-line scanner/s (see my website) or try this: http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp it is good and will report (only) whatever it finds.

[Edit: The old version 4.4.7 has also cleaning cappabilities]
