High CPU & memory usage since latest update (OS: Win 7 Home)

Thats what it look like when I’m not doing anything.

Add to that anywhere between 30-70 CPU usage when loading websites, using programs, etc.

I have not done anything to my PC, OS or programs. Avast just decided to start hogging up everything in the background right after the latest update.

Okay, so now its running at 70-85 CPU and over 750k memory usage CONSTANTLY, and causing freezes constantly.

So…

Since Avast went from “Good.” to “Worse than McAfee.” in a matter of hours, anyone have any good alternatives? Cause my PC is actually becoming unusable with this BS resource hogging going on in the background.

And no, its not doing scans, its not doing updates, its just idling and still eating up EVERYTHING.

So, things I tried:

Changing the settings and seeing if anything makes a difference. Didn’t work.
Logging on/off. Didn’t work.
Restarting the computer. Didn’t work.
Using the Repair-function. Didn’t work.
Reinstalling. Didn’t work.

Only thing left to do is uninstall.

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)
  • Which version/build of Avast…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

win 7 ultimate
Avast Premium Security 20.2.2401 (build 20.2.5130.568)
Virus def: 200414-0
UI version 1.0.505

I had the same problem except maybe worse as I had CPU usage up to 100% and the UI wasn’t even loading.

I also tried what you did and was getting very alarmed.

The problem has resolved after doing the following, I doubt this is a global cure, but it worked in my case.

Firstly, I noticed crashes with the avast browser updating so in the boot up (Run|msconfig) I disabled loading the browser .
Then, I did the Win 7 critical updates - even though supposedly it is not supported and I assume they are laced with surveillance tools, nevertheless I did it, restarted etc.

Then I chose to uninstall Avast - but then chose the Repair option when prompted. Problem remained.

I then downloaded the latest Avast Premium Security and installed. Restarted Windows and it now seems to work normally.

Hey i´ve got the same problem since the new update of Avast…

Repair Avast:

  1. Avast GUI → Settings → Troubleshooting
  2. Click on ‘REPAIR APP’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

okay did that and it helped a bit… CPU usage got down on ~10% when pc on idle.
when i use the pc. something like surfing in internet it jumpes up and down between 20-80%. (only the Avast client, dont know if this high jumping is normal).

Now i can use my pc again. so better than before

You’re welcome.
