Hi Everybody ,
“Please Be gentle with I’m a Virgin to this”…
I'm a Pensioner, that plays around on my Pentium 4 - 1.33ghz , PC that runs Windows 98SE with 522 mb Ram. I like working with Photos etc,.... but I'm forever getting errors and lockups,...... I have a CPU/Ram indicator (WinoverBoost2) on the Taskbar .....that let's me know CPU + Ram usage ................. I have been using the Avast Home anti virus for a few years now and have had no problems at all except for the last few months . ......... My CPU is constantly running at 100%....... even when there is nothing running except the desktop,..........I have scanned using Adaware, Search and Destroy ,and Avast .....nothing out of the ordinary comes up.
I can only get the the CPU to run normal. If I CNT/ALT/DEL and highlight the Avast.setup .....which is C:\programs files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Avast.setup...and "End Task".... as soon as I do that the The CPU usage drops and everything is fine .......... But after looking at the File( Avast.setup) .......I think it holds all the info to protect my PC.
Sorry about being so long winded ........... I hope someone can help me .
Regards Ron.
Hi CVSA, Hi, TEch,
Thankyou for your Replies,
The version I have is Version: Build Oct 2006 (4.7.892)… the Data Base File is : 0703.0
My PC has been running but unattended for abut 3 hours........ when I got back to it... the CPU indicator was reading 100% again ..... after checking I see that the File :"C:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Avast.setup" has reinstalled itself........
I Have no Firewall or Security ......... as I said everything has been "OK" until the Last couple of months..........and after looking at my Build Date and from what "CVSA" said re: Previous Version ........... I might venture to say that I could be about to turn the corner and head in the[s] Right [/s] Correct direction.
I will download the Latest version and run it for a day or two.... and let you know the results... Once again Thank You for your Help ...........
Regards Ron, :) :)
PS: Hopefully I’ll be able to start the PC,… without having to go thru “Scandisk” ( Fingers Crossed )
EDIT:: After Install and Reboot…the File :“C:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Avast.setup” is now not loading and causing the Problem … ( could be on a Winner) ;D ;D ;D Thanks again. Ron
It’s normal… I mean, each 4 hours avast will check if there is an update available, the file avast.setup will be created.
How did you configure avast updates? Automatically? Both program and virus database?
You ask "How did you configure avast updates? It’s normal… I mean, each 4 hours avast will check if there is an update available, the file avast.setup will be created. "
I can undestand what you say about updating the “avast.setup”… but with the previous version … it would be constantly running along side of all the other programs in the background …
Since I have installed new version the File :"C:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Avast.setup" is now not loading, and causing the problem. The CPU is just idling along at between 5% – 60% … until I do something like open a program or window , then it rises to 100% and drops back.
Without “Counting too many Chickens”… I think the New Version fixed it…
Attached is the Screenshot of my Settings…
Thanks again for your help .............Regards Ron
I have no other AV software
Win XP SP3
Avast 5.0.594 FREE Edition
Whenever I startup Windows, avastsetup.exe (or a name very similiar; I did not write it down) causes high CPU usage. I’ve seen the CPU high 99% more than once (using Windows Task Manager). After a couple of minutes it calms down and I can start using my computer without performance degradation.
What is causing this? Is there a way to “tame” this program when starting my computer?
Change (or add) AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds value into the [InetWD] section of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\avast5.ini file.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.
I checked under all Users and the Alwil Software driectory does not exist. I checked under my name and it does not exist. Hmmm. Okay, I installed on the D: drive because I only put the OS on the C: drive in case I have to rebuild it. Not in the D:\Avast directory. Hmm. Okay, I searched C:, D: and E: drives. Not there.
As I said the folder is likely to be hidden so you must use the option to show hidden files/folders in windows.
Ensure that you have hidden files and folders enabled and disable hide system files in Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, Hidden files and folders, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, etc. see image.
Mike_A, I have this configuration before: C for Windows and D for programs.
The problem is that, if you need to rebuild C, all programs on D will be killed because of Windows Registry and links.
I see no reason, anymore, to use this. Windows and programs are on my drive C.
I am aware of this but it still works better for me. I can sometimes use a program by clicking on the EXE (or a shortcut to it). Beside I do not have any idea of half t5he programs that I have so by having a directory for them I know what to rebuild if I have to do so.
@ Mike_A
The avast5.ini should always there, see image of the location in WinXP, a) can you see that folder and if so, b) can you see a file called avast5 ?
If you can see the avast5 folder and an avast5 file (you may have the hide known file types default XP option still set), Configuration Settings ‘Type’ then that is it.
There is no avast.setup file in the docs & settings.…\avast5\ folder.
