When I open a hotmail inbox, a virus warning sounds… before I even open an email… just by clicking the inbox. I tried my wife’s account and same thing.
“A Virus Was Found!”

Abort connection?
The same exact thing happens to me, on both of my hotmail accounts, and on my moms.
The same thing happened to my hotmail… only diff is mine was http//by114fd.bay114.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/HoTMaiL?&curmbo
how do we get rid of it???
Check this topic started by Alan a little before this one, same problem.

It would appear to be a false positive.
Same problem here. Just opening my inbox sends off the alarm. I’ll keep checking here for the answer. Thanks.
The only differences occurring here are the differing server bay names of the Hotmail system. Only a certain number of users are assigned to each server bay in Hotmail.
Any ideas on how to correct this? Trying to move to chest, repair, or delete - none of the options works. I’ve deleted and rebooted several times, and each time I open my Hotmail inbox, I get the virus/worm alert and am told to disconnect.
As a temporary work around:
In the Webshield:
Click Customize > Exceptions tab > next to the box “URLs to exclude” click Add > modify the highlighted box to:
Click OK > OK
Remember to go back and remove this exception when the problem is reported as fixed here.
HELLO EVERYONE
I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY HOT MAIL ACCOUNT
EVERY TIME I CLICK IN TO THE MAIL
THE AVAST VIRUS ALERT GOES OFF
AND NOW THE INTERNET EXPLORER CAN NOT DISPLAY THE WEB PAGE
I CERTAINLY HOPE THAT THIS CLEARS UP SOON
Did you try the work around posted by alanrf in the post right above yours?
The work around isn’t working for me. I actually get two virus notifications, one right after the other. The first one looks similar to the one posted on this page, the second virus is in my temporary internet files folder - which I’ve emptied, but still shows as a virus there. I tried to add both addresses to the Exceptions, but no luck.
How are you accessing your Hotmail account?
Via IE?
Via Firefox?
Using a Webmail to POP coverter and a mail client?
I’m guessing that your answer is IE. I just tested with that.
Unfortunately, as you have observed, the workaround I posted is insufficient for IE users.
The workaround I posted earlier is sufficient for users of Thunderbird downloading Hotmail to the Thunderbird mail client.
The workaround posted earlier is needed by IE users but they also need another exception in the Standard Shield to avoid scanning the Temporary Internet folder for IE. I am reluctant to try to post how to do that since the folder name is dependent on the user name of each system: the opportunities for error are significant and it increases the risk of exposure to real problems.
Reluctantly, I would suggest that any user really needing to get to their Hotmail (before the avast team come up with a new VPS file) should pause the Webshield and the Standard Shield before accessing their Hotmail.
Please, please remember to continue the Webshield and the Standard Shield when you have finished accessing your Hotmail.
Same problem here
wont we just get the virus then if we pause out anti virus??
seems its just started after the latest update as it was all working ok earlier
i just started getting it with a worm warning + VBS:Malware [Script]
so unless hotmail is sending worms to everyone i gess its somthing wrong with the latest update ive run a few other scans and nothing has shown up and my firewall hasnt done anything and thats quite sensitive… and we have another comp with a different AV which isnt giving warnings ??? ???
I too have had that worm warning + VBS:Malware [Script]. i can go into my hotmail but not to the inbox box page without it popping up and giving me the only option to abort or if im lucky to put it in the chest. i can go into my junk mail and trash but not on the inbox page. i have ran different scans and it comes up as clear.
I also went on my laptop which doesnt have Avast on it right now and i was able to go to my inbox… ??? ???
I can also send emails but have not just thought i would see if it would work.
so just trying to be patient and reading any helpful ideas or comments.
there is no virus on this Hotmail page … it is a flaw in the VPS update.
I am part of the club.
Is every single Avast user who tries to access their hotmail account receiving this false positive?
Are we 100% it is false postive.
Has someone from Avast addressed this in any of the threads?
IS
I would like to see confirmation of false positve also because i had the first call on this at 2400 EDT for this alert, i got a second an hour later. I had been accessing my own hotmail accounts since the first call and was NOT getting this alert. In the last hour or so, one of my account started given the alert while the other has not done it yet. I would think a false positve would be there for all accounts, why the almost 3 hours before one of my accounts which was not giving the alert then started giving the alert. One account remains un-effected. On all systems that where effected avast puts multiple files into the chest shown as infected. The inbox button in hotmail caused the error when an html file is placed in the temparary internet files folder.
