How can I install avast?

Hi,

How can I install avast! for Linux, on Kubuntu? I really need help with installing programs.

  1. Download the deb release (avast4workstation_1.0.6b-2_i386.deb)
  2. Right click it and choose the ‘Installer’ option.

or

  1. Download the tar release.
  2. Use Ark to unpack the archive and extract the files.
Go to the extracted files folder.
  3. Open a terminal in this folder.
  4. type
    su
    Give your password.
  5. type and run
    ./lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/desktop/install-desktop-entries.sh install

Info in this extracted file: \usr\share\doc\avast4workstation-1.0.0\INSTALL

Installing from RPM
To install avast4workstation from RPM package, login as root and type

rpm -Uvh avast4workstation-*.i386.rpm

(replace * with the version of your RPM package).

Installing from tarball
No installation is required, files in the bin/ can be run directly after unpacking the .tar.gz archive. If you would like to integrate avast! into your KDE or GNOME desktop, run

./lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/desktop/install-desktop-entries.sh install

from the place where you unpacked the archive. Run
Please see the README file and man pages for more information how to use the program.

Tech I did the command but it came back saying no such file or directory.

Ok, I put in a command I thought would be right and it said, unary operator expected.

What does this mean?

But which command?
Are you trying the deb version? If not, why not?
It’s the better for Kubuntu.

Where do I get the deb version?

Don’t ask me why it is in this stupid place :stuck_out_tongue:

Sry Tech had to ask… ;D

Ok, I downloaded the file and then assuming I double click it to execute it I get an error, see the screenshot.

It does not work this way.

  1. Right click the file.
  2. Choose ‘Kubuntu Package Menu’
  3. Then choose ‘Install Package’
  4. Write your password
  5. Done 8)

Hi,

Ok I did as you said and I believe it installed! But now where do I find it? Also does Alwil have plans to include the .Deb pachage on the Linux download page?

Thanks for your help so far,

Justin

Justin, the only way I’ve found to learn something in Linux is broking my own head untill I find the answers…
There isn’t an highway wide open to Linux… you’ve using Windows for years…
So… it will take time.
You could learn how to create a link in desktop for avast.
You can run
avastgui
in terminal too 8)

By the way, not far from that post in forum… was the solution for other languages besides English:

Hi Tech,

Thank you so much for your help, I couldn’t of done it without you, I created a link to the application avastgui on my desktop and now it opens when I click the icon! Thank you so much Tech.

Regards,

Justin

P.S. Does the license key expire after a year for the linux version as well?

The icon to this link could be found here: /usr/lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/icons/avast-appicon.png

I suppose the answer is yes 8)

Thanks Tech,

Also do you know if Alwil will put the .deb installation file on the main download page?

Thanks for your help,

Justin

Most probably… Right now, the Linux version isn’t the faster one to be updated… Dublin is working hard on it but… time isn’t enough.
Anyway, did you see anyone from Alwil team in the last three days?
I hope that none a catastrophy happened in Prague ;D

I don’t understand… oh and did you get my PM with the link?

I’ve started running Ubuntu today. very confusing. I just installed Avast. how do i know it’s running? will it start up every time i boot up?

No. avast for Linux is just an on-demand scanning, not a resident antivirus.
There are few antivirus residents for Linux. Anyway, few Linux viruses that requires the on-access scanner
