How can I share my Wi-Fi safely with my neighbour?

Today, my neighbour smelled my Wi-Fi on his phone and asked me if I can share it with him.

I told him I’ll think about it.

Can I safely share my Wi-Fi?

Can he snoop into my PC?

Is there any software?

See if this helps you:

I personally only share my WIFI with people I trust and there is a difference
between knowing a person and trusting them.

Hello Chris,

I would not… who knows what that person will access on the internet… and finally it will come to your neck… be careful.

nmb

I strongly agree with Bob, you never know if this person would be torrenting and such. Unless of course you know them and trust them.

*On a side note, last time my brother came over and brought his iPhone, the second he came into the house everyone’s WiFI signal was low. Those things suck WiFi dry.

Couldn’t agree more, it is the IP address assigned to the router connection that is recorded for posterity, not who happens to be piggybacking on to it.

Given the country Chris is in I would say that is even more of an issue than most western countries and I wouldn’t allow this if I had broadband even in the UK.

Not to mention any security issues of someone on your network being infected and the potential to spread throughout the network.

Hi Chris…

Along with the risks the others have mentioned, you might face problems with your ISP as I’m sure most of them, if not all, consider someone sharing your account stealing. :frowning:

I would contact your ISP to make sure. Even if they grant you permission, I still wouldn’t do it if I were you. ::slight_smile:

Merry Christmas!

God bless

The last thing I would do is contact the ISP, don’t pre-empt anything like this until you made a decision to proceed as they would probably put the squeeze on it and adversely my pay closer attention to your account in the future.

As a point, I don’t believe the ISP would be aware of someone else using the connection as all they see is the router IP and possibly a network IP and they aren’t to know who that is on your local IP address range.

Hi David…

Hence my suggestion.

Someone else who is using the connection is not paying for it, therefore it is a form of stealing, whether an ISP immedietely detects it or not. Along with that is what you and nmb alluded to, potential (additional) security and legal risks, depending upon what the other person uses the connection for. :frowning:

It is far better not to even go in that direction!

God bless

iPhone certainly does not “suck WiFi dry”. Having an iPhone/iPod Touch connected to your network would not have any effect on your network anymore than a laptop would.

I am not a racist or hater.

But the guy who asked me for the WI-FI is a Palestinian.

My greatest fear is " What if this guy visits a terrorist site" ???

I often see him in his car trying to access others WI-FI

I am also worried about loosing my passwords and stuff.

Thanks for all your advise.

It is even a crime in this country to visit Christian websites or use VIOP telephone

I use Hotspot Shield to evade the ISP who is restricted by the government.

I think I will kindly tell him a lie that my internet connection is slow so sharing will make it much slower. God forgive me.

lol haha maybe it is who knows?
But doesn’t sharing wifi don’t slow down the connection speed more?

I say no way, I would politely give him the phone number for him to call your provider and say hey they got terrific rates and services talk to one of their representatives.

Simply secure your WIFI with Security encryption (WEP) then the only way to access your WIFI is with the proper password.

yeah i would do that too like bob suggested. then he has no access

@ shiw liang

My internet speed is around 4MB so sharing is not that problem unless he is torrenting himself to death.

@bob & pinnacle

It is already WEP but cracking it is not that tough nowadays. So, I change the password once in a while.

Is there a way to monitor if someone is trying to break in?

GEE WHIZ !!! Great lets make it easier for those trying to find a way to get through everyones router encryption by putting the software’s name in a reply. he, he, he, do you know how much it is for a 3 year key just kidding

Hi Chris,

When using a WEP password please make sure it is rather long, at least 9+ characters. And is not a word/group of words (example: marryhadalittlelamb) as these are easy to crack. Be sure to use special characters such as !@#$%^&*()_+ …etc.

I know, “What? 9-10 characters? How am I going to remember that?”. Well that is easy, just write it down on a small piece of paper, then tape it on your computer case or monitor.

You should also be able to “monitor” or see any blocked attempts your routers firewall has made, by accessing the control panel. You can usually type in 192.168.1.1 into your browser bar, than enter your router login information.

@ pinnacle

sorry abt that name. I changed it.

@Alan

I will apply your idea

It would be great if there were softwares that will notify you when someone tries to break into your network.

And allows to share with a person you trust and adjust the bandwidth for him. For example I can give him 256 out of 1 MB

darn it chris i was just writing it down to google it ha,ha,ha ;D

Hi…

Don’t lie to him, just explain that after thinking about it and considering the advice of others, you decided not to. I’m sorry that you live in a country where you are not allowed to live out your faith, I will pray for you and our other brothers and sisters there and that the government of the UAE will abolish these kind of laws.

God bless
