How do I cancel the default smart scan daily

This scan ramps up my cpu usage to 10%, but it takes the temp from idle 40-50deg to 75-85deg. Why?

Have you looked in the Avast UI, Settings > Protection > Smart Scan - set it to run Manually.

Thanx for that. Weird thing is the frequency is set to monthly @6pm, but it runs it daily after about 20-30mins after I startup the pc.

I’ll uncheck auto scan & run manually & see what happens

With everything cancelled, it still doing a scan after about 30mins after I startup my pc. Is there some sort of other background scan that the program does?

Afaik it runs a root-scan after 11 minutes. I’m not sure if this is related.

Seeing high temps under light load isn’t that odd though. If a process hits a single core hard, that one core will get hot, and that is the temp reported. It doesn’t mean the whole chip is at that temp.

So what do I do?

I’m at the point where I want to uninstall avast.

Is there a way to turn off the root scan?

I rather doubt it is the scan after X minutes, given your topics title - “How do I cancel the default smart scan daily” and that it is entering the Smart scan a boot time scan happens in the background and is unrelated to the Smart Scan.

Having made the changes mentioned is the Auto-continue Smart Scan checked as in my image ?

I would suggest you do an Avast Repair ?
AvastUI > Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Repair APP - it is important Restart your system after completion.

Before doing this ensure that you have made the suggested changes.

Thanx. I’ll try the repair thing.

Is there any other automatic scans the program does? I mentioned smart scan, as that was what I found on a Google search.

Given your initial comment “This scan ramps up my cpu usage to 10%”

CPU usage up to 10% doesn’t seem excessive, what process is Task Manager indicating for this increase ?
However my Avast Antivirus (free version) doesn’t use much, whilst posting this, but the more active my system is the more active your antivirus would also be.

Avast is an on-access antivirus scanner and as such any activity on your system or internet connections will be scanned by Avast. This is what an on-access antivirus does.

Can you give us some details of your system specs, CPU, RAM, SDD or HDD, etc.

The background process that runs just says Avast Antivirus. There are 4 other processes that have the same name.

Cpu: core i9 13900k
Ram: g.skill ddr5 5600mhz 32gbx2
I have 2 1tb 980 pro nvme drives (1 is the OS drive)
2 4tb 990 Pro nvme drives

Whilst that may seem excessive, it is actually quicker to do it this way than have only one multi tasking function for all functions.

As you can see from my screenshot with Avast Antivirus Free the usage is classed as very low and my system spec is way lower than yours - Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD. this laptop is over 6 years old.

Browsing is the biggest system resource usage even when that is going on Avast is still relatively low.

A screenshot of your task manager at the time of this 10% usage might help, it might help find wat is triggering this use.

No worries. I uninstalled the program, no more unwanted scan.
