How do I know if it is a false positive?

I tried downloading a program from desktoplightning com and Avast told me there was a Win32:Adware-gen [Adw] included in the download.

I contacted the company and received this reply:

"We’ve confirmed that DesktopLightning.exe is completely virus free. You might already know that the false positive virus report does happen to some virus scanners.

To resolve this all you have to do is exclude the DesktopLightning.exe from your anti virus scanner then you will be fine. Usually the help section of your anti virus software should tell you the steps how to exclude a particular program."

How do I know if it is a false positive? I do not want to download it only to find out it is really Adware or something else.

Henry

what is the size of the file?.

if you can upload it virustotal.com, upload and give us the link to that page.

give us the link to the file you are trying to download. change http to hxxp. (eg:hxxp://www.desktoplightning.com/xxx/xxx.exe)

edit : you can download the file and if it triggers avast! resulting in the infection mentioned above, move it to chest. go to avast chest, in the user area select the file you need to send and click email to avast!. go to program settings and in the settings for chest change the “maximum size of file to be sent” to more than the file size of the infected file(if the file size is > 1024KB). or you can zip the file and send it to virus@avast.com. if you use a password while zipping the file, then put the password in the body of the mail.

The easiest thing is to give you the link:
hxxp://www.desktoplightning.com/download.php

No idea of the file size.

Welcome to the forums, henrybarnett.

This thing is also a program to deliver unwanted pop-ups. No one wants that.

Right, so one person says it’s a phissing site and another that it delivers unwanted popups. I want nothing to do with a Phissing site but that is not the same as a popupsite. So what is it? I read the host-file.net report but it seems a little light to me. It is as if this is the first time the site has been checked. Am i right?

However it is a different picture checking with Google that says…

Look up Viral marketing

Notable examples

  • The Ponzi scheme and related investment Pyramid schemes, are early examples of viral marketing. In each round, investors are paid interest from the principal deposits of later investors. Early investors are so enthusiastic that they recruit their friends resulting in exponential growth until the pool of available investors is tapped out and the scheme collapses.
