How do I replace or Un-Corrupt this File...?

Hi, I recently had a virus and deleted it - It was causing the Blue Screen of Death and disk Read errors etc. And I also think it may have corrupted some files.

One message said - Windows could not start bacause this file was deleted or currupted

\system32\hal.dll.

Or something like that

Try Here, I’ve used this site for a long time and never had a problem.

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?hal

You could also try a repair, you can follow the steps here:

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/restorehaldll.htm

hal.dll is one of the most important parts of the system - i.e. you should make sure that you get exactly the same version of the file you had before (and the rest of the system expects).

If your having a problem obtaining it, let me know which version you need and I’ll make it available.

After you succeed on restoring hal.dll, keep a copy of it.
When it is damaged (or infected) you can’t boot.
Also it will be good to install Restore Console: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B314058&x=5&y=10
and http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307654&x=15&y=14

Sorry, But I’m not good with all this complicated stuff. I’m not sure how to keep a cop of Hal.dll and The recovery Console :o??? :-\

And now something else came up when I got the Blue screen of death of whatever it’s called it said.

‘Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key’

…?

Also, How do I find out the Hal.dll one I need?

— Oh, and thanks Marc for that Website

Husk, consider using the Windows CD to repair your installation.
Boot the computer with it and follow the directions to repair your Windows installation.

When I put the CD in. It loads etc. Then I press R for repair - Then…

Boot
SystemRoot
Load
System

And a Whole lot of things and None of them work

Overinstallation can solve the problem and you won’t lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose ‘Repair’ installation of Windows and install ‘over’ the old installation.

Are you sure neither way you can repair?

The Disk won’t even load now. It continues right to my homepage

It is called ‘WindowsXP Home edition’ Right?

I saw Tech around last time I was here but he seems to have gone off line.

You mean, all of the sudden? Sounds rather odd. I wonder if the optical device is recognized. Can you see the content of CD/DVD in Windows Explorer?

That’s right.

What do you mean recognize content of CD/DVD in windows explorer?

i Tried one of my other disks and it works

Then, it seems that the optical device is recognized properly. If you put Windows Home installation disk in CD/DVD drive and restart the computer, does it still automatically start your desktop?

I’ll try again

It worked that Time, 99% Sure it did

But, I have no idea what I need to do

Would the Virus name help, Although I chested it, Scanned it, Deleted it?

When is “that time”? When you wrote the comment below or after you tried it after reading my previous post?

According to your previous posts, you seem to have problem with the integrity of the OS. So, Tech and I suggest you to use recovery console or reinstall of Windows in order to fix it. To have that choice, you need to boot from Windows installation CD.

Maybe, some people here may shed light on what happened to your PC.

Where’s the recovery Console and What’s an OS. And I have no idea how to reinstall Windows.

Ok, it was called Win32:Trojan-Gen {VC}

Oops, My posts weren’t appearing, I forgot about the pages

And one thing I remembered it, I’m not sure if it was the virus or not but a message said. Something is trying to modify my anti-virus

I see.

Hmmm…if you can still make a contact with the person who built the computer, it would be most desirable to leave issues on his/her. I’ve found a relatively easy instruction for repairing Windows on the net but there are quite a few obstacles for you to go through the procedure safely. Probably, it is rather irresponsible of me to let you go through it. Now I wonder if Tech or other people come up with better ideas…sorry.

Thank you for posting but, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to help since it only tells that it’s a kind of trojan.

Right…

I’m going to give you the details of everything. That might help

The virus

The following should help you repair your version of XP:

Remember, you’ll also need to have a copy of XP SP2 handy unless your version already includes SP2.

Here’s another tutorial that may help you:
