How Do I Stop Avast from Scanning Out-going e-mail?

Avast has disabled my Outlook Express.

If I can’t stop it from scanning my out-going e-mail, then I’m going to UN-install AVAST and get a new version of Norton’s, which I realize isn’t as efficient as Avast, but I really need to be able to use Outlook Express.

It is the only way I can send my scanned stuff.

Thanks. S.P.

Click on the blue Avast! icon, go to internet mail/customize, and on the SMTP tab uncheck “scan outbound mail”.

Wouldn’t it be better to find out why, because avast hasn’t disabled my outlook express.

So what makes you think this, e.g. what are the full errors are displayed ?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

You don’t provide any information which might help us to help you.
What is your OS ?
Who is your ISP ?
Do you use SSL/TLS email, e.g. secure encrypted ?

I clicked on the blue Avast! icon, and there is no “internet mail/customize”.

I did find “SMTP”, but there is no tab to “uncheck scan outbound mail”.

With the very first e-mail I sent, after installing AVAST Home edition this problem started.

I’m going to Joplin tomorrow and get Nortons 2009 and uninstall Avast, but thanks so much for your willingness to help, I sure appreciate it.

Avast is just not for me I guess.

Wow, thanks, Charlie.

I was able to find a box that says: “Outlook Exchange”, but not “Internet mail”.

Anyway, since the word “Outlook” was familiar, I clicked on that, found “SMTP”, and told it to quit scanning out-going e-mail.

Probably too late for the e-mail I’ve been trying to send since 2 p.m. this afternoon, (it is now nearly 11 p.m.and way past my bed time), but I bet for following e-mails, it will be ok!

Thank you so much!

David R, I think I should have UN-installed Norton’s before I installed Avast!

I have XP,
Don’t know what you mean by “full errors”.
I use OUTLOOK EXPRESS
I have HUGHES.
I don’t know from “SSL/TLS”

I am not stupid;I’ve written an autobiography, been a single engine pilot, graduated from college with a 4.0 at nearly 60, traveled all over the world including behind the iron curtain, learned Win 3.0, Win 95, Win. 98, and everything in between.

All I can say is that as soon as I installed AVAST! the very next e-mail I sent slowed down so dramatically as to make Outlook Express unusable.

Thanks for your willingness to help. I bet you are a computer genius.

Yes you alway need to deinstall first your other anti virus then install avast

  1. Remove NAV or Norton 360 through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me. Boot.
  3. Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.

Thanks, Tech.

This morning I did two things: #1. I went to “Control Panel”, “add & remove”, and there is no sign of NAV now.

Does that mean it is ALL gone?

Do I need to look for it anyplace else???

#2. I eliminated “Registry Mechanic”…all but the “shared files”.

You said to “repair AVAST”.

How do I do that??

Thanks, seaprompt2

NAV is still there even if you do not see it.

Please use the tool that Tech suggested above.

When I eliminated NAV, (which was after I had installed AVAST), I’m guessing the “Norton Removal Tools” went away too, because they are nowhere in the list of installed programs when I went to control panel, add/remove programs.

I did a windows search, and they just are not in the system.

The way NAV is, I’m not surprised there are some files hiding some place, but darned if I can find them, any ideas where to look?

Thanks, sp2

Norton Removal Tools is a stand-alone program, when you run it, it would not install in your computer, so you cannot find it anymore, if you have downloaded it from symantec.com website search in your computer for “Norton_Removal_Tool.exe” or “sym_NRT.exe”

if you cannot find it anymore, it’s mean that you have ran it directly from website and it’s gone because it was in your TEMP folder.

OH, ok, that is what I did, apparently.

I’m beginning to wonder:…since I undoubtedly terminated AVAST’s internet mail thing, what about if I UN-install AVAST, and start over?

I’m in way over my head here, but I can un-install stuff then re-install.

after removing old anti-virus it’s better to re-install your current antivirus, just stop avast!, uninstall it and do install it after reboot and cleanup your temporary files using something like www.ccleaner.com  , hope problems go away!!

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Thanks Omid.

I think that may be my best bet, since I’m not at all comfortable with doing the “safe mode” thing.

Sure appreciate your willingness to help. sp2
