How do I stop Avast from Updating CCleaner?

Avast creates an item in Task Manager to update possible dangerous software, and that’s fine. However, anything done on our computers SHOULD ASK PERMISSION! I understand there was a dangerous version of CCleaner 5.x, but I use the older 4.19 which has the graphical interface I prefer. I do NOT set it to check for updates, and I do NOT set it to monitor. This version, especially running this way is NOT a security threat. But with each new update of Avast, it creates a Task Manager listing and not only updates Avast, but replaces CCleaner without permission. This is outrageous. I suggest that you repair Avast to either alert us to a possible issue and let US decide if we want you to add a Task to the system, OR alert us of an update you wish to install and again let US decide.

You’re a bit late to the party…

The easiest fix is to run CCleaner as a portable program - start it, go to Options, Advanced, in there tick the Save settings in an INI file option and close it , a ccleaner.ini file will appear in the install folder; copy the contents of that folder somewhere else and uninstall it, the original folder will be gone, just like the entry in the All Programs list.
Now just run the exe from the copied file, it will no longer be automatically updated by Avast.

You can also download the portable version from here and use it:

Hi again…y’awll…

Well, I am on the war path once more, along with the Ultihost & others.
A few months ago…
For reference > https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=217752.0

I thought that I was safe after I uninstalled their latest abomination of CCleaner v5.41.xxxx & re-installed my favourite v2.34.xxxx,
but NO.

Avast, “in their mis-guided wisdom” decided to update MY CCleaner v2.34.xxxx again.
&, again WITHOUT MY PERMISSION or any kind of notification.

AVAST!!!..You DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to update any of MY bloody programs, no matter what they are or what they do, where they come from.

I demand that you stop this kind of behavior IMMEDIATELY!

You are just an anti-virus program, NOT an update checker of/for old/er programs on OUR M/C’s.

Cease & desist.

@ Bob,
That’s all fine ‘n’ dandy…The only problem is that it’s the latest v5.42.xxxx & we DO NOT WANT the latest version.

@ Asyn,
I think that I’d much prefer if you linked to the original thread that I started back on 30th March & not just the “reason why the update was carried out.”
I’m pretty sure that we can all read the entire thread & what transpired over the next month.
Thank you.

@ Azraelbuc,
Many thanks for the info.

I will, hopefully, never have to see that MY CCleaner v2.34.1200 has been updated & will NEVER be updated…again…EVER!

To all concerned re; these totally outrageous, un-notified & un-authorized updates to our programs.
Use the info so provided by Azraelbuc, because it works.

Thanks to all & to all a good night.

Regs, Mike…

ps. If anyone wants the good ol’ version 2.34.1200…let me know & I’ll chuck it onto my mediafire site.
Sorry but I don’t have any other version/s & you cannot get them from any of the “recognized “old program sites”.”
AVAST saw to that.

you cannot get them from any of the "recognized "old program sites"." AVAST saw to that.

Filehippo has 18 pages of CCleaner installers going back to version 1.16 here:

Hi alanb,
Thanks for the link.
I tried a few of the “Old Programs” sites & saw that all the links all pointed to the newest version of AVAST.

Nice to know that we still have an option to run any old version we like…available.

Regs, Mike…

You’re welcome.

Hope it helps someone.

Well, most users prefer a direct link to a staff reply, the interested ones can always read the whole thread.

@ Bob,That’s all fine ‘n’ dandy…The only problem is that it’s the latest v5.42.xxxx & we DO NOT WANT the latest version.
Just to clarify, the “we” is you. Most of us prefer the latest version.

Hi guys,
Thanks to Asyn & Bob for their responses.
(How did I know that they would both reply like they did?)

Well, there are some people that just want to control & take care of their own M/C’s,
without any kind of outside interference, especially from an Anti-Virus program
that “thinks it knows best.”

& to quote Bob…
“Most of us prefer the latest version.”
In this case, the us is you.

Geeze!
We could go on like this forever.
Best we stop this now.

I’m just glad that apparently & hopefully, I will still have my good ol’ faithful v2.34.1200
of CCleaner for a very, very long time.

I off to continue with my moderating at mozillazine.

Stay safe & secure y’awll.
