how do i temporarily completely 'shutdown' avast?

Hi,
i cannot find out how to temporarily shutdown/close the avast programm, it cannot be done with contrl alt delete, etc.
i guess there must be an option in the program settings or it must be done another way? at least, i couldnot figure it out.
the reason why i want this is because i want to do a good defrag of my system and like to then temporarily close as much as possible programas i do not need at that time. (ofcourse, keepng internet closed at that time of having no antivirusprogramm running) (next to that i suspect that avast slows down the defragmentation very very much).
ps, i might have askes a almost similar question here once but can’t find it back…so sorry if someone reminds me of that…

hope to read your answers here…?

Hi meikime

I use jkdefrag (sorry RejZor) and as far as I can tell, avast! ignores it completely.
You can right-click the tray icon and choose ‘Stop On-Access Protection’ if you wish but I don’t bother.

And do not forget to restart On-Access Protection once you have finished.

hi,
ok, good replies, thank you, but i miss info though…
i know i can shut down the on acces things etc (did that) (turned back on too ofcourse) but doesnot help because
then still, avast is not completely shutdown. the programm is still running. (parts of it so to say).
and, i know, i guess many or some of you will maybe dis agree but i appreciate the windows vista build in defrag programm and would like to use that one, not another one…

i have always been able to use the win buildin defrag and since in installed avast it never ends defragmentating, yet i must say that i cannot be 100 procent sure that avast causes this ofcourse but i suspect it though and therefor would like just close the entire programm temporarily.

didn’t get an answer on that yet and hope somebody understands how to?

if no answer come, i’ll just delete the programm (avast), then do the windows defrag and see if i am correct, that will at least show wheter avast does or doesnot cause this problem here.

and then reinstall avast when defrag has been done allthough that is ofcourse crazyness to do it that way (as i prefer to defrag once per day/or per week and do like avast)…hope really to get an answer on my question to just temporarily close the complete prog
I know windows itself has a function to do so somewhere but in the past that caused troubles somehow, making my system function not completely normal, but also that info is very much appreciated: how to use vista controlling which progs may or may not run? If i receive correct info about that, nothing can go wrong, it’s a matter of giving vista some instructions/rules, i just do not recall how to do so exactly but more important is: i must absolutely be able to redo it also (so turning back the system as it was) otherwise as said, my system functions not ok.

hope to read some more… and thanks above here

in absolute impossibility of other options, i will use a third pary defragprogramm. but i think there is a solution…

meikme…

It should be enough to defrag your system, the running services aren’t scanning anything, so shouldn’t imped a defrag. I don’t stop avast before using either the windows defrag, jkdefrag, defraggler or RejZoR’s Power Defragmenter.

I don’t notice any appreciable slowdown, so much so that I generally only use the bog standard winXP defrag tool, which really isn’t much to write home about.

You could however do what was old school teaching run the defrag from safe mode, where avast and a whole slew of other programs that would otherwise run.
