How to block https://www.facebook.com

Hi guys i want to block https://www.facebook.com but i am not allowed to do so in avast free edition what is the way to block https protocol

You can. Just go to Additional Protection tab on the left side and select Site Blocking. Enter URL that you want to block. If it’s for someone else, password protect avast! so it cannot be bypassed.

Sorry, But you can’t block https://facebook.com in avast! 6 you can block http://facebook.com though…

This is clearly a bug which has to get fixed. It doesn’t matter, HTTP or HTTPS, it should be able to block it but now it automatically assumes it has to be HTTP all the time. Which is wrong.

You can however use this:
.facebook.com/

This will block anything related to Facebook, regardless of protocol used. It will also block all the links to Facebook that might appear elsewhere as well because of the nature of it.

EDIT:
Bummer, just found out it does nothing to HTTPS again. I’ll check this in the avast! 7 beta when it comes. It’s a rather annoying bug.

in the meantime do it at router level or in your Windows hosts file

or you can block it with openDNS

+1

I don’t believe it is so much a bug, but the way that the web shield works as it is the web shield that ultimately does the blocking. Since the web shield doesn’t monitor https connections it won’t be there to actually block it.

You would find that if you entered https into the Additional Protection tab, Site Blocking, once you click OK it would place an http in front of the https, making it worthless.

Maybe the solution is not using an antivirus to block a site, but, as suggested, the host file, or alternatively, the settings in the web browsers installed, or the firewall, or…

I guess the means to achieve the specific block depend on the knowledge, the system (PC, OS…), the users using it, the available different tools, the final goal.

I cannot block it using AIS.
