How to enable task manager

I was infected by a trojan virus >:(, which I had to manually remove, since avast! couldn’t delete/move/chest…
After that I realised that I couldn’t get to the task manager, since “this function is disabled by the administrator” :-X. My profile has admin priviledges, but the virus has disabled the task manager functionality. So, how can I re-enable task manager? ???
I’m using WinXP Home SP2, and latest avast Home.

Do you have Windows CD? I’m thinking if the command:
SFC /scannow
won’t bring back the original task manager .exe file.

Anyway, did you try to run avast at boot time?
Other antitrojans (like AVG (a.k.a. ewido), a-squared, etc.)?

The original ‘taskman.exe’ is still in [Windows] folder, and seems to be ok.
Moreover, in Safe Mode, under Administrator profile, it works properly. ::slight_smile:
I assume that the problem is that I have this functionality disabled in my profile. I guess it’s a disabled priviledge in my profile, and a registry correction should fix it… :-
Of course, I might be wrong…

There are several options outlined here

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm

#3 seems the most likely to work, but back up the registry before making any changes.

EDIT: regedit might be disabled too. Post again if that’s the case.

Worked just fine!!! ;D
Thanx!!! :-*

Be sure you’re clean:

  1. run avast at boot time
  2. download, install, update and run other trojan remover tools: a-squared, Free AVG Antispyware or SUPERantispyware (trojan removers). Some users recommend Spyware Terminator.
  3. use the immunization of Windows Advanced Care features of spyware/adware cleaning and removal.

There is a tool, xp_emergencyutil.zip from http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm.

This small VB 6 utility will create a usable backup copy of Taskmgr.exe, MSConfig.exe and Regedit.EXE in a new folder, called C:\EmergencyUtils. The new copies will be named Copy_of_Taskmgr.exe, Copy_of_MSConfig.exe and Copy_of_Regedit.com.

These programs are extremely helpful, and usually necessary in helping to rid your computer of a viral infection. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based on their original file name, and prevent them from running. The alternate copies will not encounter this problem. Simply navigate to the C:\EmergencyUtils folder and double click the file you need to run.]Creates usable copies of REGEDIT, MSCONFIG and Task Manager
