For earlier versions of Avast I had to disable SSL in Thunderbird and enable it in Avast.
The latest Avast allows for SSL settings to be enabled.
I was just trying to change everything to the new state,
but now I’m asked by Thunderbird to allow an exception rule because of some unknown identity.
The certification status is referring only to the Avast company.
What am I supposed to do, now, please?
Allow this exception rule or not?
I’m also asked to save this setting permanently. Shall I check this option or not?
Btw, I’m on XP Home SP3 with Firefox 22 and Thunderbird 17.0.8 and Avast 8.0.1489.
After upgrade to avast! 8.x, some mail clients like Mozilla Thunderbird, SeaMonkey or The Bat! can start to show warning messages telling you that the mail server certificate is invalid when you send and receive e-mails.
avast! 8.x introduces a new method of scanning SSL/TLS-secured connections in the Mail Shield. It does not need any modifications of account settings in your mail client. It works transparently in most mail clients, only those clients that have its own certificate store need manual configuration (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird, SeaMonkey , The Bat!). Without this configuration, you will get warnings that the mail server certificate is invalid when you send and receive mail.
Why is Thunderbird asking for this certificate, today, although I imported it the other day, already?
It is asking me again to allow an exception and when I try to import the certificate, it says, it was imported already.
EDIT:
Looks like it’s working again.
I had to remove the certificate and after exporting it again from the certmgr.msc, I imported it once more into Thunderbird.
Now, it’s just that I don’t understand why I had to do this again?
Thunderbird just asked me to allow the exception rule again.
Why Thunderbird doesn’t remember the already imported certificates longer than a week?
What on earth is going on here?
These certificates just keep on annoying me.
If there’s no other solution to this, looks like I have to go back to the older settings where SSL is enabled in Avast but not in TB.
What can I do now, please?
EDIT:
After looking for the certificates in TB, I noticed the one referring to Avast was gone, just as if I had never imported it, so I had to import it again.
I don’t understand why this certificate is always removed after a week.
No direct comment above, as I use Outlook Express 6, not Thunderbird. (On Win XP Pro SP3 with Avast 8.0.)
However, is there a detailed explanation of how we should do the various settings in each of (a) our email app and (b) Avast, depending on whether the email ISP requires SSL or not? (One of my email accounts requires SSL with certain ports, and the other email account does not permit SSL and uses different ports.) In my case, I don’t remember ever being asked about a certificate.
All seems to be working, but it would be good to understand the interaction and have a step-by-step…
Using Thunderbird (=TB) with SSL disabled (for your accounts which require SSL),
but enabled in Avast, you won’t be asked about any certificates.
I guess, that’s the best way to use TB on a system where Avast is installed.
In this case, SSL ports have to be entered in the according settings of Avast.
Since I don’t get any reply in my other thread here,
I think I will best return to these previous settings.
I haven’t been using OE 6 for a very long time, but as I remember, it can handle more than one account at a time,
but messages of each account are all together in one inbox only.
TB can sort them more comfortably by using separate folders for each account.
