I’m using Avast free and I have a Screen Capture program running 24/5 that takes a snapshot of the active screen every 15 minutes.
But occasionally Avast pops up and asks do I want to run a scan etc. Of course that screen stays active until I close it which means if that happens during the night I have a snapshot of it every 15 minutes.
Is there a way to stop Avast popping up unless I ask it to run a scan etc? I do my scans over the weekend.

Maybe you can turn off the Screen Capture program over the weekend?
Seems Avast is operating as it should/does and your screen capture program is doing the same.
If you are using Avast Free, these pop-ups cannot be turned off unless you do a Custom Install of Avast Features, and, even then, some advertising will still come to the fore. One of these settings to clear is Avast Cleanup, you shouldn’t as much advertising about Cleanup after.
The only way to really minimize pop-ups in Avast is to purchase a paid version and change advertising settings within that program.
