How to Stop Avast v7 auto updating to v8

Hi all,

Have a laptop here which gets a BSOD every time Avast 8 is installed. Whenever I install v7 I set the Program update to manual, however it still automatically upgrades to v8. How can I stop it from updating to v8? D o I need to modify the avast5.ini file or anything like that?

Thanks…

Which version are you running?
Your signature says avast free (latest version)? ???

I’m not running anything atm on the Windows 8 machine other than Comodo Firewall. I installed 7.0.1474 on it and set the program update to manual… a few mins later it updated to 8.0.1489 I think…

I then removed it since it causes BSODs and makes the laptop freeze…

So is there any solution?

Bump…

Have you tried a clean install of 8 ?

I tried a clean install of 8 and today even factory reset the laptop to default… In other words I went over the top. It still didn’t work so… you get the point. It’s just my win 8 machine that doesn’t work with it, my other 4 computers work fine with it though they are Win 7.

In that case when you install V7 under setting > Updates put programme to manual… You will still get advised about V8 but it will not download

I did that the first time I tried it. I mentioned it on my first post too. I did set it on manual but it still auto updated. I’ll give it one more try but this time I won’t connect it to an Avast account. Would there be a way to modify the avast5.ini file to not make it check for proram updates or anything that could stop it from happening?

Did you OK out of the dialogue ? Silly question I know

Not sure about the ini file as I am not an expert there

I’m 100% certain I did. That begin said, do the VPS and program update servers differentiate by any chance… I could block those servers with Comodo Firewall if need be.

No, I am afraid they use the same servers

So that leaves me with 1 hope… if the avast5.ini file could do anything. Thanks for your help, Essexboy.

Sorry I could not help you fix it

Not a problem, at least you helped.

The only difference I see between your system and mine is the fact that I use the
Windows firewall and you’re using Comodo’s firewall.
I have no problems and conflicts and you do. Is is possible that the firewall or parts of the Comodo
firewall are interfering with avast! ???

I did a format of the system and the first application I installed was Avast. Comodo firewall was not installed at that time and I got a BSOD repeated until I removed it from safe mode.
