Well, since you have given no info as to what your os is, service pak, firewall, ect…
I will give you a very generic recommendation.
Have a smurfy day! ;D
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
but dude i can’t seem to update
it won’t allow me
Why won’t it allow you to update, e.g. what errors are you getting ?
The more information you can give us the easier it is for us to try and help.
How are you trying to update, e.g. from the avastUI manual update or are you downloading the latest version ?
What about my question about previous AVs ?
Ok, a little trick that has worked for me when resident software goes fubar a little…
open up avast user panel, turn off the self protection module.
Then see if you can “exit” avast logically from the system, i.e. ask it to exit.
Then try to reboot.
Hopefully, the program will restart itself on reboot and get back to normal.
If not, you will have to go the boot into safe mode rout, and uninstall avast and reinstall.
I do not know what version you are using, so BEFORE you do anything, grab the avast removal tool,
download a fresh avast setup.exe file, and be sure to copy your license key so you can re-register it.
Maybe one of the guru’s can post the removal tool link here please?
I am betting that the turn off and reboot trick will work. If it does, make sure you re-enable the self protection module. (I see it in settings, troubleshooting…check box labeled self defense…)
good luck.
I update it by clicking maintenance
and now mcafee is now enabled
Ok, well, there is a problem then.
You cannot have 2 virus programs installed at the same time.
It will cause terrible conflicts, which is probably why avast turned off in the first place.
Keep one, completely uninstall the other.
Turning one AV off without fully removing, I found out, is not good enough. I had McAfee+Avast!, it was all well and good for about 40 days…then came the blue screens.
There are many great ways to layer your security, give you better protection. 2 resident AV’s are not one of them. Always more harm than good.
note: if you decide to lose McAfee, be aware you need their removal tool for a correct uninstall.
The McAfee removal tool can be found at MajorGeeks, among other places.
The built in uninstaller should be run, probably best to reboot the computer, then the removal tool run (and again, probably best to reboot) and following this it may be necessary to repair Avast, but it will probably be ok.
Two antivirus at a time will, sooner or later, bring you problems worse than you can imagine…
how can I remove mcafee?
This is the guide I followed>>http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
But I first uninstalled Avast!, then reinstalled after McAfee was gone.
I’ve had no problems since then.
The instructions are for Windows XP, since you haven’t bothered posting any system info.
Gargamel360 has posted while I was typing, however, this may still be useful.
-If McAfee is operating, exit the program. Usually there would be an option to do this from the system tray icon. You are looking to exit, or turn off, or disable it, or something similar.
-Click “Start” then “Control Panel>Add/remove programs”, locate McAfee in the list, select “remove”. Let it do its thing, reboot when prompted. If not prompted, reboot anyway.
-Run the removal tool linked above. Reboot.
-Check to see if Avast is operating. If not, turn it on. It may need repairing. The program should be updated to 5.0.545.
General:
-Whenever a AV or Firewall is being removed/reinstalled, the computer should be disconnected from the web. (So download all the files you need for the operation, first.)
-Security program installers should be run on an admin account.
-Only one AV or firewall can be installed at a time. You can install as many demand-only scanners as you want.
I have solved it guys
when I update it on the avast it won’t update
so I tried to update it on add or remove programs and it worked ;D
And thanks for all the help
You must remove McAfee, or the problem (or another problem) will occur again.
This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.

Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).
