How to uninstall Avast to reinstall the right way?

Hi All,
I was using Avast free version before my xp desktop machine went berzerk and I had to reinstall XP. Immediately after the initial install, I installed Avast 4 free version. Then I did the windows update and it include sp2 and sometime during the install, there was some sort of clash with avast. Windows error said ‘windows sometimes does not work with some antivirus programs’. Well, I knew it did because I had used it when everything was fine. But just to get the windows update working, I had to uninstall Avast in Add/Remove in Control panel and installed another freebie just for the duration. Now that the SP2 is downloaded, I want to go back to Avast but it is still showing up in Control Panel and when I try to uninstall, I get the error: “RUNDLL Error loading C:\Program~1\ALWILS~1|Avast4\Setup\setface.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

How can I uninstall ‘the rest of Avast’ to reinstall Avast as a final attempt for antivirus? Since the initial install was done prior to SP2 update, I’m not sure if reinstalling and then uninstalling and then reinstalling would work. Would it?

Please Help someone???
TIA,
katy

 Hi Katy :

Long time, no see . So what did you do to make your computer go berzerk ?
After reinstalling your OS, it is probably best to “download” but do NOT
“install” an antivirus program until AFTER getting the Microsoft Updates, since
most likely your computer is SAFE from being infected while connected to
the Windows Updates Site .
But I am surprised another antivirus was “active” while you got those
“Updates” . What is the name of the “another freebie”, probably either AVG
antivirus or Avira/Antivir, each of which have their OWN proper Removal
procedure, which I can give references ?

Thanks TedNelly, this DID the trick!! You’re a life saver!!

No worries Kat happy it all worked out for ya!

have a good one ;D

Hey Spiritsongs, long time no see is right!! Yep it was AVG but I like Avast better.
I just needed something for the duration of the SP2 download.
Now I’m back to what works the best for me and that is Avast!!! Great product,
Great People!!!
