HP Recovery Win 32: Malware Gen

Hi I just finished a full system scan and it reported 8 infections all are win 32: malware gen and all located in my recovery I’m assuming these are false/postive but need to verify this I searched the forum and did find one thread from 2008 with the same issue but it really didn’t help me.

Any ideas on what I should do?

I’m using avast 5.0 Pro definitions up-to-date

I just analyzed a couple of them at Virus Total and 9/42 are saying its TrojanSpy.Agent.bdzz or
something equivalent but the odd thing is avast does not report them online as virus also when
I was trying to upload them avast threw up a warning and put them in the chest not all of them
though.

I also checked the properties on a few to see the last modification date and it was in 2006 which I
bought the PC in 2007 brand new in the box, windows xp.

This is a link to a similar thread from 2008
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37749.0

As I’m trying to scan all these 8 files on Virus Total avast is throwing them in the virus chest,
I managed to do 3 or 4 and 9/42 are saying its some type of trojan I really don’t see how
a file from 2003 can be a trojan that would mean I bought a new PC infested with trojans in
the recovery which HP does not supply recovery discs they have you burn them from the creator
thats installed but I was never able to get any cd or dvd to work with this and to top it all
off I was a brand new computer user so I had no idea and of course my warranty ran out by the
time I learned this and the want to charge me $50 hour for support pfft yeah right.l

Thanks Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Welcome to the avast! forum,

Anyway, do you ever had any experience before using avast! 5.0 which detected all of those malicious application with your previous AV?

If you still have the source at avast! virus chest, you may submit to virus lab of avast! team to mentioned that is False Positive if you sure that is not suspicious or harmful activity at your machine.

For sure, do you mind to submit HijackThis log in here?

Then we’ll help you as well.

cheers,

Hi Chiang

I have 4 that were moved into the virus chest and I tried to restore them and they are still there after right clicking and clicking restore?

I have been using avast for a few years, and have had the new avast 5.0 since it came out.

I will try to do a system restore to move the files out where do I email them to be inspected?

Also I will run the HijackThis and be back with that.

Thanks Lisa

It is a know issue that many malware scanners report system recovery files as being infected.
Just disable system restore and the problem is gone.

A copy of the file will remaine in chest after restoring If you right click the file in chest, is there not a " send to avast " selection ?

Here is HJT Log Thanks for helping me I sent 4 of the files to be analyzed i figured it out and I managed to get the restore to work although the files still exist in the virus chest.

I don’t want to disable system restore I use it.

Thanks Lisa

Hello,
you can send us (virus@avast.com) the samples packed in password protected archive with password “virus”, without quotes, and put “False positive” to subject and link to this forum topic to email body.

Thank you,
Milos

I see C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_05 present that is a very old version of Java and has security exposures.

Go to Add/Remove programs and un-install all Java there.

Download JavaRa then run it to remove Java remnants:
http://raproducts.org/javara.html

Current Java Version 6 Update 18:
http://www.java.com/en/download

A drive image from a cleanly installed system and recent backups is what you need. System restore is crap. Think about. What good will it do you if your harddisk breaks down?

No sign if any infection in the HJT log. But you got things installed/loading at boottime that are not needed.
Like the toolbars, jqs, HP boot optimizer, adobe, pc doctor
The lines that have “file missing” at the end should definatly be fixed.

Hi @ Milos I can’t add the files to a zip as avast throws them into the chest when I open the folder
Although I could turn avast off and do it , but I did send 4 of the that were in the chest to be analyzed.

So should I also send them to the email address too for double checking or faster analysis?

@YoKenny Thank You I will do that.

Thanks for all the Help much appreciated, Lisa

@Kenny
not 100% sure from what version maybe 6/12
But java now uninstall the old when installing a new. Just tested, my 6/17 was removed when installing 6/18

@Eddy how would I create an image of my drive I know how to recovery my system
also I use sytem restore in case I get a virus.

Thanks for pointing out the startup items I’m not sure of what file missing items I have
in the HJT log I will take a peek.

Thanks so much Lisa

Like the toolbars, jqs, HP boot optimizer, adobe, pc doctor
pc doctor is a bloated/system resource hog, i would replace it with Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I use Macrium Reflect™ for hard disk imaging:
http://www.macrium.com

I agree with Pondus about PC Doctor and Malwarebytes.

Remove with HijackThis with Fix checked:

@Milos I zipped and passworded the files and emailed them.

I also removed all the starup items except RECGUARD, Avast UI, ctfmon and NVCPL.

Next I’m updating my Java to the latest should I uninstall the old 1st or just run it
over the old? As there are 2 different suggestions.

Also I do not see the empty files in the HJT maybe I should put on my glasses?

Thanks Lisa

@YoKenny Ok will do Thank You.

Hello,
thank you for sending 9 samples, 8 of them are same inside. They look like false positives, will be fixed in next VPS update.

Milos

Personally I use Norton Ghost (now valled Symantec Ghost) as image software (not freeware)
But HERE are some freeware ones.
