I can't move items to the chest after scan is completed.

After a full system scan is completed, it says that some files couldn’t be scanned. It says “error archive password protected”. I am given the option to delete, repair, do nothing, or move to chest. I select apply this action for all files to move them to the chest and when I hit “apply”, nothing happens. It’s like the whole “scan results” page doesn’t work. I’ve had Avast for 1 year and have never seen this before. Help!!

Thanks!

Hi SMPGS,

I’m just a forum member, not a Avast Support Tech.

The message “error archive password protected” is displayed when a compressed folder’s contents cannot be scanned because it’s password protected.

The detection cannot be removed from the archive because of this.

I’d recommend manually deleting the archive ONLY if you are SURE that it’s not needed by you or the system.

Most importantly, “password protected” doesn’t mean “infected” - it’s just a notification. Therefore, removal of the file is not offered.

Generally speaking, if something that shows up in scan report comes from:

  • memory;
  • URL (website);
  • “inside” an archive that can’t be opened (has some password, for example);

then you can’t apply any real action on them. The last one, “inside a password-protected archive”, isn’t really going to show up. What would be listed would be the archive itself, as “password protected, can’t open / can’t be scanned”, or something alike.

In addition, when you actually have the possibility to take an action, you should select the specific line of the list so to decide what to do with that object “found”.

Having a password protected archive doesn’t mean that they are infected (they may or may not; until you open them, you don’t know). It just mean that Avast doesn’t have the means to investigate inside it (Avast doesn’t know the password).
