I can't visit avast.com!

Hello everyone!

Two days ago I bought a Avast! Internet Security" using my home PC (the one I’m using now) then using my flash drive I installed the Avast on my laptop.
The installation was successful, avast automatically update but when I manually try to update in the maintenance, I could read an error that says: “Cannot connect to server”

I tried to visit “www.Avast.com” using different browser, Firefox, Internet Explorer and including the browser I’m using in my Home PC, Google chrome but all of them give a “couldn’t be found” message  (I can visit many other site without problem using my Laptop though)

So I contacted the Avast Technical support and they advice me:

Check the proxy settings in avast!
Open avast! - Settings - Updates - Proxy settings to “Direct connection (No proxy)”

Also some firewalls could disable program’s access to Internet even if that is set as rule. This happens after program changes, such as after update.

You can remove existing rules for avast in your firewall, then start avast update (or restart Windows to trigger auto-update check). When firewall asks, allow avast.setup access to Internet and create the rule again. If your firewall has option that allowed program changes often, set it too.

I did change the proxy settings, and even disable my Windows firewall so it won’t hinders the Avast program then I restart the computer but until now I still can’t connect to avast site.

Check your HOSTS file at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\

Open HOSTS using Notepad and check to see if avast.com is listed. If it is, delete the entry and save.

Please report if it works. Thank you.

*Change the drive letter if necessary

Jesica,

Have you been having any problems with this computer before installing Avast?
What was the previous antivirus, and how was it removed?

Hello…

.: L’ arc :. I look up the folders, and find four files I could open in Notepad but none of them have only HOSTS as a name, but I open all the files including the file name “Back-up host” and not one of them have avast.com listed.
And what’s the “drive letter”? :-[

Tarq57 No, I don’t remember having problem with my Laptop before.
I had a Norton Antivirus before already installed in my Laptop when I bought it, and I remove it using the control panel add/remove program.

And thanks 4 trying to help me with this.

Can you please post the file “hosts” as an attachment (see " Additional Options…" at the bottom left of the forum reply pane).

What version of Windows are you using?

Download the free version of MBAM (blue download button), and save it to your desktop. Run the installer file by double-clicking it. As part of the install, it will ask to check for updates. Do this. Once it is installed, open the application by double clicking on the new desktop icon that will be created, and run a quick scan. If anything is found, have it remove it, and if it prompts to reboot the computer, do so promptly.

Post the scan report as an attachment, please.

The drive letter is the letter that is assigned to a HardDisk. For example, by default, the C: drive.

By the way I attached a screenshot of hosts file. If you still can’t find it, please post back.

Sorry for being late to visit and post a reply to this post, I was travelling away from home and now has a temporary internet problem, but I will do as you guys suggested and see if it works, then I’ll report back here  (I’m currently using internet càfe to visit online)

I’m using Windows Xp, and yes I’ll download the MBAM and attach the report here.

Thanks!
Jesica
