Hello All,
I am somewhat stumped on this one: I use a computer to download Avavst Home Ed. I then proceed to install it on the same machine it was downloaded to. Everything looks like a successfull install, that is when I reboot… I do not get a valid IP address when I restat the computer??? (I get 169.127… instead of a 192.168…) I reinstall the network driver to no success. I set the computer to a static IP and I am not able to surf the net (I am able to ping the computers on my network tho, but no further). I make sure there is no other antivirus or firewalls running (including Windows firewall). As soon as i uninstall Avast Home then reboot, the computer then gets a valid IP addy.
I have installed this software 100’s of time before and never have I run into this issue. This a P4 computer running Windows XP Pro SP2 and 1gb RAM. If anyone has any info to a solution I would be greatly appreciative. Lemme know if I need to provide additional information.
I sure would like more info. Especially on how the network setup is. Using a router, hub, server?
Both 169.127.xxx.xxx and 192.168.xxx.xxx are IP addresses in the range that is used for a local machine. So that seems normal at this point.
Since you can ping other systems on the same network, your system seems to have a valid IP.
What other security (related) software do you have installed?
Did you have another av installed before avast?
If so, which one and did you entirely removed it before installing avast?
This issue (with different causes) have happened to others.
Have you used the search option on this board to see if a solution that worked for them also is working for you?
I seem to be having the same problem here also. I have Mafee on the computer now and just want to use avast. I am useing a wireless router, but that is for my other computers to get on the internet. This is for my main computer. I have tried to install this program twice and to no aval i still can’t get on the internet. I search the forum and no help. So help please.
I’m somewhat confused, You say you have tried to uninstall twice but failed and now can’t get on the internet, which program have you tried to uninstall ?
If avast, the install may have failed as you have another resident AV installed, avast will disable some of its elements to avoid conflict, effectively it isn’t running fully. Your firewall may also be blocking certain avast providers, ashWebSv.exe the Web Shield and or ashMaiSv.exe the email scanner, ensure they are allowed, what is your firewall ?
If your installation is messed up, download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to HDD so you can find it later, use that in the systems that require it.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Uninstall McAfee, reboot, run the McAfee utility just to be sure, reboot.
If avast now runs and you can connect no problem.
If not using add remove programs uninstall avast, reboot, run the avast utility, reboot.
I have installed Avast twice and twice I had to remove it from the computer. Reason to remove it was that once Avast was on the computer I was unable to get on the internet…Clarify this running Mafee on the computer now… What I understand that you are saying must remove McAfee first and then install Avast???
The simple answer to your question is Yes, you have to decide which you are going to use and uninstall the other.
Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended (this goes for any AV not just avast), as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.
So trying to install avast whilst you have another resident anti-virus installed could cause conflicts, at best nothing will happen other than avast disabling elements to avoid any possible conflict, at worst it could lock-up your system.
The conflict could be that McAfee and avast are fighting over internet protection.
You haven’t answered what version of McAfee or what firewall you use (which as I have mentioned could be blocking avast when you install it) ?
Another question, rather than state ‘you seem have the same problem,’ can you please describe the problem in detail with errors, etc. ?
To properly REMOVE McAfee PRIOR to installing Avast, It is IMPORTANT to know
WHICH year's McAfee product you have, because IF you have a "2006" Edition,
the "VSCleanupTool" mentioned by DavidR SHOULD be used; IF you have a
"2007" Edition, then the "MCPR" Removal Tool SHOULD be used .
Here goes hope I have the right answers to solve this problem…1. I am using McAfee security package 7.0 looks like to me its a 2006 edition…As far as the firewall can’t seem to help there its an all in 1 program…different item in 1 package…As far as the error I get says you are unable to connect to the internet having no connection to it…I ran a chech on the internet for my motium seems I have connection… You mention 2006 version and a 2007 version kinda hard to find out which one I have?? I believe I have the 2006…Hope it was helpfull
I suspect that the McAfee security package also includes a firewall that more than likely blocked the ashWebSv.exe as I said previously. Whilst it might be a package you should be able to get into each different element to adjust settings etc.
There is probably an entry in the add remove programs for the McAfee security suite/package this should remove all elements and reboot. You could then do a custom install and ensure that you don’t include the anti-virus element of the package.
However, I have never used any McAfee product, so you will have to take some time to find out how it works, read the help file, etc. This way you should be able to allow ashWebSv.exe and ashMaiSv.exe internet access.
If you are looking to get away from the complete suite/package there are other firewals out there that you can use.
@ Tech
I suspect this may not work with the ‘McAfee security package’ if it includes other security products, like a firewall. When I suggested it as an option I wasn’t what version MsChar was using.
In this case, please, McAfee should answer and solve the problems… look, this is what the user gets when install a McAfee program… you can’t remove it
Won’t Control Panel > Add/Remove work in this case? If not, isn’t there a specialized tool to remove this garbage from the computer?
Absolutely, but first you have to have McAfee admit that the problem was theirs and I somehow doubt they would. They would either blame avast or say you shouldn’t install a second resident AV.
I suggested add remove programs, complete uninstall of McAfee followed by custom install without the AV element as we have suggested for other suites, Norton (spit), etc.
OK all…Finally got rid of McAfee security on me computer…So to let everyone know you must remove each item seperatly, starting with the AV first, this is done in the add and remove programs in the control panel…after each removal must be restarted each time…You do not need any other programs to help you do this, I am running XP Home edition… Once you remove McAfee…you the can download AVAST and it will install, and you can get on the internet Thank you all
We thank you all for the help…and yes thanks for the welcome to the forum…I have learn allot been in an out of this computer and glad I can pass my experiece to this forum, so that it can help someone else…
