I need help with turning the avast off

I downloaded and installed the free and downloadable version of the avast!4 home edition. I want to defragment my computer, but I’ve heard it goes alot quicker when the anti-virus software on my computer is turned off. I’ve explored the software, the “help” on the software and the FAQs on this website but I CAN’T FIND WHERE TO TURN THE ANTIVIRUS (AVAST!4 HOME EDITION) OFF!.
Note: I want to turn the antivirus off temporarily, but not uninstall it etc!

Replaced with new answer.

Hi again,

Rereading my answer to you I see that it can be a bit unclear.
Here is the short answer:

Left-click the a-icon and choose Pause.
If you have set it up to show all providers choose Pause for each of the providers.

When rebooting everything is as it was before pausing the providers.

Hi,

There is a quicker way to turn the providers off and that’s is to right click the Avast icon and choose Stop On-Access Protection. This will turn all the shields off.

To start them all again just right click the Avast icon and choose Start On-Access Protection.

However, if you prefer to turn a just some of the shields off follow what hlecter said.

Mike, when you pause the providers, you use 3 clicks including confirmation with your method.

When I click to pause the providers in my way I use 3 clicks. ;D
(But I need 4 clicks if the providers are shown separately on the screen and not pulled together.)

“Time is money”, as we say in Norway.

BTW, had been nice if posters could give some feedback, I think

The answer depends on a couple of things, what OS are you using and are you intending to use the windows defragmenter ?

With win9x, winME, etc you should disable virtually all running programs, but it is probably better to do it from safe mode where, avast and many other programs don’t run. XP is a little better behaved again you could run it from safe mode.

I wouldn’t recommend using the windows defragmenter as it is sooo sloooow, there are third party defragmenters that are much better, but I use a free one which I use with XP and I don’t have to disable anything.

Power Defragmenter - RejZoRs - eXcessive-software.eu.tt Site - this knocks the windows defragmenter into a cocked hat and it is free.

OK, hlecter on review of what you said I can see how you do that now with just three clicks, in a different way to how I described

Bummer the “Power defragmenter” says it is only for WIN 2000 and XP. I use WIN98SE.

I have some probems with Ebay crashing my IE Browser so I was wondering if the “Xtra Windows Stability 1.1” at that same site will be okay with WIN98SE, it doesn’t say one way or the other. My Browser seems to crash if I do to much in Ebay and sometimes but rarely in Amazon. It happens very very rarily with any other web sites, however.
