Icons changed

This morning when I booted my machine (Vista Home Premium) I saw that skype has changed icon. I attach the picture. I am curious why it happened and how I can restore it without reinstalling skype.

Didn’t mention what’s your system, OS, nothing… make sure to post your system specifications, and most important your OS version when you ask questions. It will help everybody to give faster and clearer answers, and of course avoid long threads… besides you’ll wait a lot less for the right answer.

Anyway, I am assuming you use Windows XP. If you don’t have it already, download TweakUI from the Microsoft website. It is just one application, part of the Powertoys.

Start TweakUI, and click on the last option (bottom of the left hand side menu). It’s called REPAIR. From the dropdown menu on the right side of the window, choose REBUILD ICONS (of course if it’s not already there) and click REPAIR NOW. This will give you back your original icons. Note, when you do this, the order of all icons on your desktop will mess up, so you have to place them the way you had them before manually…

Cheers!

If you right click that link and choose Properties, is the link pointing to the correct skype.exe file?

I did mention it is Vista Home Premium.

I attach screen shot. It is grey out and I can’t choose it.

Then simply use TweakVI for Vista, there is even a version for the 64-bit OS:

EDIT:Not sure this version has this REBUILD ICON CACHE option, since I don’t have TweakVI installed on my system, so you’ll have to storm through all those settings and try to find it. TweakUI for XP has it and it was always very useful. It always helps in situations like this.

Your target in the picture you posted is wrong so I would suggest that you re-install the program.

It should look like the picture attached.

Your target must point to the actual program file.

Bob, that is how it shows when you click on PROPERTIES of Skype application (on Vista at least). Here is mine and it works perfectly…

Mine is the same as Sasha, but the icon is correct for me.
Although, se224141, you can follow Bob suggestion of reinstalling or even pointing the link to that executable.

Yes, icon is correct on my end too… meaning, if his application still works (Skype), and only his icon got screwed up, the ony thing he needs to do is to rebuild the icon cache. Reinstalling the application is not necessary in this case.

If you go to your COMPUTER, click just once on your C partition and right click it and choose PROPERTIES. Pick GENERAL tab and click on DISK CLEANUP icon. After few seconds/minutes you’ll get another window open. Scroll down the list and make sure THUMBNAILS item is checked. Click OK and that should solve your problem.

Cheers!

As for skype, it didn’t work out. I have to uninstall and then reinstall. It is fine now. However, now I notice avast! has changed icon. Please see attached .jpg image.

Is this a normal icon? Why icons are changing? What can I do? Is there any thing wrong with my system?

The icons aren’t changing… This is a Vista feature.
Vista identifies the icon of applications that requires administrator rights with that “shield”.
It’s normal, it’s ok. When clicking an icon like that, you’ll be asked by UAC to elevate the user rights for that particular program.
