Icons missing from systray

Greetings –

I found and issue with the way the display of the systray icons is handles.

Its not clear to me how it was first done during the install, but the “tag”
“avast!” that is used in the registry seems to contain an invalid character,
“!”

What I noticed on my Win/2000 system is that the icons were not in the tray area
and that the “run list” did not contain the entry –

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe

It is not clear to me how this happen, maybe unchecking the “display icon” box
in the setup.

I could not get the entry back into the runlist via regedit when using the tag “avast!” …
if I just user “avast” then I was able to fix the issue.

I don’t know if now “!” is an invalid value, but it does not work now.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder. I wouldn’t try this as a first option (but a final one) as you won’t be able to find the true cause of the problem.

Thanks for the info …

The system is clean, just avast is running and a firewall – which I don’t think will effect regedit … I will give the repair option a try
