I’m running Avast 4.7 in Vista. When I open a new IE7 window it is very slow opening. I get the message 'Start downloading from www… at the bottom of the screen there are then about 5 seconds of disc activity before the content of the pages is displayed. Once the page is open movin to other web pages is very fast. However, if I completely close the window and re-open it I get the same delay.
This behaviour has only started in the last few days. After investigating I find that if I switch the ‘standard shield’ off the delay disappears, put it back on again and it goes slow again.
Any idea what the sudden problem is and how to cure it?
Thanks
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What is your firewall ?
What sensitivity is the Standard Shield set to, Normal is the default ?
I would suggest you try Terminating the Web Shield and see if that makes any difference as I can’t see how the standard shield would slow page loading of IE (and you aren’t so much at risk).
This option, ‘Show detailed info on performed actions’ is off by default, so you could enable it and see what files are being scanned. This function is also on the Web Shield provider so you could also check those.
It’s definitely the standard shield. If ANY of: 'Scan OLE documents, scan executed programs, or Scan dynamic libraries is ticked in the scanner (basic) tab it slows the initial opening of the first IE7 window. Untick all three and there is no delay.
I have not had another AV program installed.
As I said it does not slow the loading of web pages generally. Just when you open the first window as IE7 is actually loading. It tried ticking the ‘detailed info’ box. It doesn’t consistently report but a couple oif time during the initial load it was scanning iexplore.exe.
I’ve got windows firewall (vista) running but witching it off makes no difference. As I said this problem’s only been there for a matter of days and I’m not aware of any other changes made to the comp at that time.
Any more ideas? What’s the effect of have thwe three items above unticked? Any dangers?
You didn’t say what the sensitivity setting of the standard shield is, if set to high it will scan more files which may slow the initial loading of IE7. Me personally I don’t like IE I still haven’t installed IE7 as I don’t use IE6 unless I absolutely have to. My default browser is Firefox on XP Pro and I see none of this delay even If I chose to load IE6.
I also don’t close my browser one I open it (until I’m going to shutdown my system for the night), so any initial delay on loading would only occur once,
The reason I mentioned the firewall is that Zone Alarm has some issues with connection delays, but the windows firewall (Vista) shouldn’t have any impact as I believe the outbound firewall checking is disabled by default.
Unfortunately I don’t use Vista, nor IE7 so I have no personal experience to suggest anything further.
As for the unchecking of OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), that shouldn’t have much impact on IE loading , it is more MS Office documents.
I’m not sure unchecking Scan DLLs on load would have an impact as this feature has a note (Windows XP+ only, so I’m not sure if the plus sign means higher versions such as Vista), but I’m sure there are many dlls loaded when you start IE7 (that is the reason for the ‘show detailed info on performed actions’).
I feel it is an absolute mistake to uncheck ‘Scan executed programs,’ this is the bedrock of anti-virus security
