If avast is unable to scan certain files could that mean theres something wrong with those files?? Could they be infected. because it seems like today theres more files it can’t scan then there was yesterday.
What exactly does avast! say? There should be a reason reported (why the file couldn’t be scanned).
it says unable to scan CAB archive is corrupted
By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. A corrupted file (in this case a cabinet, archive file) is unable to be opened to scan.
Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.
There may also from time to time be other files that ca’t be scaned, the most common is a password protected file. Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn’t know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).
When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can’t be scanned.
What about if there windows files thats are unable to scan?
Same, same, it entirely depends on the reason given (the file name and where it is, etc.) as to why it can’t be scanned and just because it can’t be scanned doesn’t mean it is infected, just that it can’t be scanned.
Could be normal, specially if the files are being used (access denied).
Which are the name and the path of that files?
Are you refering to big size cab files?
it says unable to scan CAB archive is corrupted thats what it keeps saying this morning it was only for 2 tonight its for 4. two of them are from documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp.… and the other 2 are windows\ software and distributon\download
Which size does these files have?
Can you send them to Alwil for analysis?
Do you know how to send them - if they’re big - using a ftp server?
According to the path fragment, it’s probably just a partially downloaded CAB file in your browser cache. Nothing to worry about. If you really want to get rid of those messages, simply empty the cache of your web browser.
