iicgt.sys possible malware detected

Since a while (file creation date 12-12-09 ) I get randomly the warning of a possible malware detection in windows/system32/drivers

Avast does the usual routine, the file gets reported to the lab and the computer reboots doing a scan at startup and everything turns to normal (no option to move it to vault btw, as suggested in a sticky).

Day later, same problem.

Google or any other database goes blank on the filename (first time for Google ever :o)

Forum gives no answer as well, online scans suggested in the sticky do not detect it. Probably be cause the file aint there after the reboot and I stop doing anything as soon as it pops up.

WinXP Pro SP3, HP Laptop
Avast runs on this machine half a year orso.

I’m pretty blond to these issues, so any suggestions other then colouring my hair, are more then welcome.

Hi Yared,

Google would not have let you down if you Googled for this this "random named sys file in system32\Drivers" ((without “”(aanhalingstekens) of-course)) and you find plenty of replies on this rootkitted trojan…
iicgt.sys is a random name and it keeps on modifying each time you search for it.
With removal also consider after cleansing with HJT: http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.aspx
It could be part of the Srizbi malware family:
See: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/Random_Name-18257.html

Download HJT 2.03 from here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/download/0b5bbb42be6243172c8e6303e69eda10/
and I will have a look at the 023in the logfile it comes up with, so add the HJT log txt file at additional options,

Well there is a case where this isn’t malware: if you have an sptd.sys driver (driver of CD/DVD emulator; installed with Alcohol 120%, Daemon Tools and some others), then your randomly named hidden driver (“aa9ak670.sys”) is not a malicious and it is not a rootkit (just using rootkit technologies) – it’s a part of sptd.sys. This behavior (hide a dropped driver and kill the body of the driver) was made by authors of SPTD to prevent CD-copy protectors, who trying to detect and doesn’t allow to work a CD-emulator software, in that case it is a FP…

Thanks, dank je wel, going to look after it and will update the results later.

Hi Yared,

A analysis on your HJT logfile left these issues to fix…

We couldn’t detect any active process of a firewall on your system. Possible reasons:
(1.) You are using the windows firewall or a hardware firewall.
(2.) You are using a firewall of an unknown vendor.
(3.) You are using a firewall, but for unknown reasons it is disabled
(4.) You don’t use any firewall at all.
We recommend you to use a firewall. Download and install one or activate windows xp´s own one…

This empty entry could be fixed using HJT:
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file) Neutral Unnecessary (deactivated) entry that can be fixed. LinkScannerIE.dll - LinkScanner, http://linkscanner.explabs.com/linkscann er/default.asp

This entry should be fixed definitely and apply the given anti-tojan removel instructions
O4 - HKLM..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [svchost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
Must be fixed! Added by the ZAPCHAS-V TROJAN! Note - this is not the legitimate svchost.exe process which is always located in the System (9x/Me) or System32 (NT/2K/XP) folder and should not normally figure in Msconfig/Startup! Re: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/svchost.exe.php

Removal instructions for ZAPCHAS: http://www.xblock.com/product_show.php?id=2854
and consider these: http://forums.techarena.in/networking-security/1120345.htm

This entry can also be fixed
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winouw32 - winouw32.dll (file missing) Unnecessary (deactivated) entry that can be fixed. winouw32.dll Filetype : Dll A Dll file (Dynamically-Linked Library) shares functions and procedures which can be used by other windows programs.

If it persists the HJT fix ,this winouq32.dll, in that case download KillBox,unzip/extract it to your desktop, from: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/spyware/KillBox.zip
Start up Killbox and place a check in ‘Delete on Reboot’.
In the ‘Full path of file to delete’ box, copy and paste:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winouw32.dll

Then press the red button with the white cross.
It will then provide a window for you to confirm the delete.
Next it will ask if you now wish to reboot, select YES.
Allow it to reboot.
If it does’nt reboot automatically, reboot manually.

Brilliant, much obliged for your support!

I will go work on it and update later.

When I openened the windows firewall setting, the green shield was ticked. So I assume it was on.

Could not find the zapchas trojan with the tools provided on the internet nor with the file search itself.

Also performed a full virusscan plus reboot with scan.

The iicgt.sys is still on the computer. When trying to remove the following message;

A device attached to the system is not functioning
. There are no devices attached so no idea what is means or why I cant remove the file. Same error Avast gets when trying to fix it.

Will use the computer to see if its solved or if the message about iicgt.sys pops-up again. If it consists, what is the %% this file is actually harmless and I can tell Avast to ignore it further?

The new hijackthis logfile in next part below;

Once again very much appreciating the help & support!

Hi Yared,

Logfile seems OK, experience any other problems with your computer?

polonus

Bah, a different screen this time (perhaps Avast updated) but it said possible rootkit virus found (forgot to make a screenshot :()

Again the same file is market possible malware.

Asked Avast to remove it (ignore was only other option), and the screen disappeared.
That was it, no request if I wanted to reboot and scan.

The computer for the rest is working fine, no issues whatsoever and that has been like that since we bought it over a year ago.

If I just had a way to rename/move the iicgt.sys then I could see if the problem persist.

Btw; when it happens we only use Chrome. The websites visited do not mather coz this time only nu.nl was open.

Going to re-install Firefox, see if it happens also, but any suggestions are welcome.

Ben nu begonnen via de zoekopdracht: win32:rootkit-gen, een oplossing te vinden.
Even kijken of er programma’s bijzitten die ik ken (vertrouw)

Oops, English

But working on finding a trusting solution using Google search: win32:rootkit-gen removal

Downloaded Malwarebytes, used to have this program. Will see if it works.
I am looking for a 1click noob-solution, not fix it by editing all sorts of files as I need something that other people understand as well when I explain it in my noobish-language

Malwarebytes was also not able to delete the file. :frowning:

What’s to do?
