i'm new and computer stupid. please help.

okay so i haven’t had avast for long now.
i got some popup saying something about a trojan and i did the recommended action and put it in the virus chest.
now i may sound very dull and stupid but seriously i have no idea what i’m supposed to do from there.
my brother usually takes care of all my coputer stuff for me but i’m tired of depending on him every time i have a problem.
someone help me.

please. really.

You have done the right thing, ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

What is the malware name, infected file name and where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast Log Viewer (right click the avast icon), Warning section where this information is stored.

the only thing that i can see is:
Sign of “Win32:Agent-DXT[Trj]” has been found in "C:/w…
and
Sign of “Win32:VB-APN[Trj]” has been found in "C:/Docu…

I don’t know what to click on so that i can read the whole thing, therefore, i feel really dumb.

The avast icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen), right click it you should see avast! Log Viewer, see image.

The "C:/Docu… (…) indicates there is more, you can expand the column by dragging the column header (title) to the right or double click on the separator between columns.

Sign of “Win32:Agent-DXT[Trj]” has been found in “C:/WINDOWS/system 32/svchosts.exe” file
and
Sign of “Win32:VB-APN[Trj]” has been found in “C:/Documents and settings/Compaq_owner/local settings/Temporary internet files/content.IE5/ZN1R3P08/qr[1].exe” file.

that’s what it says.

I suggest:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];310405
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot.
  4. Use a-squared, Free AVG Antispyware or SUPERantispyware (trojan removers).

Besides what Tech has suggested either these can help with clearing temp files, ClearProg - Temp File Cleaner or CCleaner - Temp File Cleaner, etc.

A google search for svchosts.exe returns many hits, http://www.google.com/search?q=svchosts.exe, this is just one and shows that different AVs may call it different things, http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32sdbotlm.html. It may be worth checking out the additional information in this link and see if any of the other stuff (sorry about getting technical) mentioned is present.
