IMAP and Forte

Hi,

I’ve noticed that whenever I use Outlook Express or Thunderbird to access an IMAP email account that the blue icon with messages doen’t close down unless I close the appropriate program.

This also happens when I use Forte newsreader but doesn’t happen when I access normal Pop3 accounts.

Am I doing something wrong, should I change any settings, or is this normal?

This is normal. IMAP is not an “on and off” mail retrieval system, like POP, but opens a connection with the IMAP server where the folders and messages are actually stored. The connection is maintained until you log off the server. See http://www.imap.org/ for detailed information on the protocol.

Thankyou for the info & link sded. I did wonder if keeping the link open was ‘wasting resources’.
