imitaaators of Avast

Question: my security system {zone alarm} is refusing to let Avast in this afternoon. It says “this program has changed since the last time it ran”. I have not asked it to update. (It is home user 4.7)

I am afraid to give permisssion for it to be let in as I fear it could be a phony program imitating Avast trying to force me to set zone alarm up to let it in.

Does this ever happen. How will I know it is safe?
Should I let it in?

If there are changes that wo uld cause Zone Alarm to block it then shouldn’t Avast send out an e mail that is is making changes that might cause such problems?

ZA has in the past forgotten settings of programs, so it could well be something like this, what part of avast is it denying assess ?

ashWebSv.exe (web shield), ashMaiSv.exe (email scanner) and avast.setup (the update function) these are the only elements of avast that should require access.

What is the location of the file that is trying to gain access if it is in the avast4 folder then it is unlikely to be a fake.

Generally only program updates are the only thing that would have ZA ask permission and at the end of such an update avast would ask you to reboot. After reboot ZA should ask permission, so you should know some thing has changed in avast.

Thanks David. That is why I am suspicious; I have not updated or instigaed any change in the program. It has been updating freqently automatically until this message: it says it is trying to update and that access has been denied. It refers to the application file.

I keep moving the zone alarm window around as it has stayed on top of everything blocking my view for hours; I was just moving it out of the way again to see what i was writing here and it disappeared. Weird. I was trying to give the exact quote of what it said. Now the above will have to do.

BUT…Now the update window has sprung up, saying that an error has occurred while attempting to update! It is identical to the one that appears when I have been off line when I go on line again. So I am assuming all is well and that for some reason ZA baulked as you said it might. Now I have to go in and try to reassure ZA. As the forum bio says, I am a newbie, a newbie to it all. Thanks again

Basically, check:

  1. If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired).

  2. If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect. If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it). Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

  3. Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

Try to allow avast.setup to connect, check the option for remember, and let avast update.
After that, close (exit) ZoneAlarm and then boot.
Next boot the setting should be saved
