Incomplete Virus Scans and Win32:ctx?

Hi,
Avast 4.7 Virus Scanner stops/hangs, when using Standard or Thourgh Scan, at my C:\systems volume information.\catalog.wci

Often Avast Virus Quick Scanner also detects win32:ctx. I send ALL of the win32:ctx to the Virus Chest.

My system is an Intel 2.8, 1500 Ram, Windows XP Pro, WD 80 Gig C: & F: data drive, Hitcahi 160 Gig backup drives G:& H:.

Thank you for your help,
Jeff

Hi, that could be an old corrupted restore point. Try this, then try the scan again.

Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point , click create

Remove old restore points

 • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools. Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run. When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab. On this tab you will find a section for System Restore. If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

Hi Oldman,
Thanks for the speedy response!

I will let you know how it turns out.

How about the win32:ctx virus always showing up om Quick Scan?

Thanks again,
Jeff

Hi Oldman,
It went well until …
“When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab”…No Option Tab appeared.

Now what do I do?

Thanks,
Jeff

That’s strange. You ran the windows cleanup utility and let it finish? There should have been a box like this after windows cleanup finished. It may take a few minutes, especially if you haven’t cleaned up for a while. See image below, this is from 98se, so you may have more tabs, click the more options tab.

We would need the name of the file and it’s location to better advise on the detection.

You can find that info in the warning log. Please post it.

Hi Oldman,
I found the options tab on top of the ClaeanUp Box.
I clicked the Windows Restore Clean Up.
I ran the Avast Thorough Scan…Avast Thorough Scan hangs/stops at the same place as before.

How do I restore my former Restore Points?

My skills are such that I don’t know how to send you the name of the files you requested.

Thanks,
Jeff

The old restore points are gone. You’ve got a new one. Sorry I thought you understood that. They weren’t nesseccary anyway and should be cleaned out from time to time…

I’ll give you the best way to retrieve the info from the log.

Open windows explorer and navigate to this folder

C:\program files\Alwil software\avast4\datalog

to get to the logs folder click the + sign beside each of the names in the line above. except for log. Click on the logs folder. Now in the right hand panel, find the warning log. Right click on it and open it with notepad.

Copy and paste the lines pertaining to the detction into your next reply.

can you post here the names and paths of files infected with Win32:CTX?
