someone told me to use something called lspfix but online i saw it doesnt work for vista

The biggest problem is that you are running 3 antivirus applications on the one computer.
This is a no-no.
You must uninstall all but one of them, if you want your computer to work correctly.

Let us know what you want to keep, and I (or someone) will walk you through the steps.

After that I’ll have a more in-depth look at the log to see if there is evidence of malware…I see none at first glance, but then, to tell the truth, I’ve had no formal training in them.

Ok- I will use whichever one you recommend. If you insist on me choosing I would choose avast (unless a different one is much better)

ok…i see online kaspersky is ranked much better - so lets go which that one. although I must not have had it set to real time protection because when I finally did a scan - it found like4 virsus (which I had it clean).

I don’t know what “ranking” system you get that opinion from. And to tell the truth, for every user that you see saying “Brand A is the best…” you will get another that says “No, brand A sucks, brand B is the best…” etc.

Kaspersky is OK, according to reviews I’ve read. Lots of happy users.
Trend Micro has lots of users. Happy? I don’t know.

Avast has a very large number of happy uisers, and that’s the one I’d recommend, of course. ;D (We are at the Avast forum, after all.)

Anyway, the best AV is the one that provides adequate protection, runs well on your system without conflicting with the other software installed, that you can understand, and has good support when you need it. You have to read the various reviews/opinions/test rankings, maybe try a few out, and make your own decision.

From what I’ve read in your HjT log, it is not the online Kaspersky scanner you have; it is in the Program Files folder, and is therefore the full (installable) AV. (An online scanner is usually a downloaded program file, or “DPF”, and can live with your installed AV.)

I’d definitely uninstall the Trend Micro security, and Kaspersky. Check that the Windows firewall is turned on. Check that the Avast installation appears normal: Do you have a blue ball with an “a” in it in the system tray area? (Bottom right of the screen.) And does it periodically rotate, for example, when opening a web page?

Try that, and report back on how the computer is running. And if there are any symptoms of malware.

I’d be interested in the virus names and original file names/locations of the viruses that were removed by Kaspersky, if you have that information.

PS: You will know if you have the installable Kaspersky (resident application) or not, if it actually appears in add/remove programs, when you go to uninstall it.
If it’s the online scanner, there is no resident protection available.

(I admit I am not sure which one you have; only you can say.)

My only experience with removing Kaspersky ended up with me having to do a FORMAT of my XP Pro system and reload SP3 plus my prefered applications.

Adobe 8.0 is vulnerable and I choose not to run anything from Adobe unless it is at the very latest level.

This is not good:
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP chain gap (#9 in chain of 10 missing)

Vista SP2 is available.

Hmm.
Here is a link to the removal tool for Kaspersky AV.
And here is a page with uninstall instructions for (some) Trend Micro AV’s. (Both tools may not aply to your versions; it would be worthwhile checking the tool/s are appropriate to your installed products.

Ok -a few points:

  1. I can’t turn ont he windows firewall - when I try I get an error from vista that it cant turn it on and tell me to try to turn it on manually
  2. I cant get online - apparently because of this lsp chain gap - I tried going to cmd promt and typing netsh winsock reset but that got an error

I should note that everything was working fine until yesterday when someone downloaded some stuff that I think must have had a virus. now i cant connect tot he internet ont his computer -other computers int he house are able to connect.
i dont know the name anymore but it was something like worm.win32.autorun.vnq

Try downloading MBAM on a computer that works. Copy (or download) to a flash drive, then transfer to the sick computer, and install it.
Try updating it; that might not work. If not, run a scan, and at the end have it remove everything found.
If it won’t install, let us know.
I’ll be offline for a while.

The command for the lsp reset is

netsh winsock reset
and the command prompt should be run as admin.
(This can possibly affect the connectivity of other 3rd party software, which may need re-installing.)

For this one :

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP chain gap (#9 in chain of 10 missing)

Check your hard disc drive with LSPFix from Cexx.org. This entry should not be fixed with HJT!
Note that ‘unknown’ files in the LSP stack will not be fixed by HijackThis, for safety issues.

In Windows XP SP2 and above, the command … netsh winsock reset … reportedly will fix this without the need of LSPFix and you can try that first if you want.

Your best bet to repair it is to try the LSPFix from Cexx.org.
