So, my coworker finally admitted to me that she had clicked on a link “sent by Verizon” and she thought that maybe her laptop had a virus now. She was not running any virus protection.
I ran Avast in and out of Windows safe mode and it found quite a few suspects that it nuked, but the Web Shield is constantly popping up with all kinds of messages about various blocks. It’s not always the same item. If someone can direct me to the location of the Web shield log I can post that.
Meanwhile, I ran ADWCleaner and attached that log here. I ran MBAM and attached that log here, too.
Now, it looks like I should stop and await further help. And THANK YOU (shouting meant, because wow, thanks) for the help. Y’all rock.
Attached. Sorry…the instructions kinda made it sound like I should await initial feedback before attaching this one.
I only got one log file, not two like the instructions suggested. Searched hard drive to be sure. Ran it again, same thing. Attaching the logs from both runs, just in case.
Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

I have a huge problem: Laptop won’t boot this morning. I hear fan/HD whoosh on and off. VAIO logo comes up and then goes away over and over. This just keeps going. I didn’t do anything else to it last night except shut it down! I unplugged and pulled out battery this morning.
I can get to the BIOS screen. But when I exit from that, I get the same thing. I’m guessing perhaps the boot sector is infected? If I can find coworkers Win 7 CD (the optical drive is the #2 boot priority behind the HD right now), I’m hoping I can boot from that? Or is there a better way to roll?
[*]Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.
[*]Restart your computer and tap F8 to bring up the Advanced Menu, then click Repair your computer
[*]Follow the prompt to enter keyboard input method, and then the prompt to enter a password. If the machine does not have a password, simply click Enter.
In the next menu, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Command Prompt and press Enter.
[*] In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
[*] When notepad opens, click File and select Open.
[*]Select “Computer” and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
[*]In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter.
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
[*]The tool will start to run. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
[*]Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach it to your reply.
Downloaded onto usb key. Powered down, plugged key in, powered up. LED on key lights up, but the same thing keeps happening. Tried burning the .exe onto a CD. Same thing. I can hear the CD drive going, but it’s not booting from it. Looked in BIOS - boot order seems correct: Changed boot order to optical first when trying CD, external first when trying USB key. HDD is 3rd in the boot order. Even tried booting with both in. Nothing. Laptop recognizes that there’s media in drive and in USB, but not booting from either.
todays malware want the computer to work, and usually without you notice that it is there (unless you have Trojan ransome) so it can do its work in silence
That’s what I kinda thought…I’ve worked more on Macs than PCs in recent years so I’m a bit behind the times.
Tried a new USB key. Still won’t boot. Would slave the drive to get the data, but afraid to infect my windows and my Mac (I run 7 in Parallels), and of course the data from the drive’s still infected.
Tried this again. Tried all USB ports (one was known to not function, but all others had been working). Tried with and without power supply plugged in. Have pulled battery out and put back in. Altered boot order in BIOS. Did this all separately so I was only changing one thing at a time. Same results each time: USB key gets power (led light flashes on) when the VAIO splash screen displays, and I hear the HDD and fan whir to life at the same time, and then splash screen disappears and the HDD and fan stop. Then the splash screen displays again…repeat ad nauseum!
