Just completed installation of 5.1 on an XP PC. I’m getting UNSECURED on the main GUI. It won’t allow me to FIX NOW or start the program. All the shields are off and can’t be started. Message says Shields are unreachable.Scans receive an error about No ENDPOINTS.

I attempted to repair via add/remove. No change. Any ideas?

If that doesn’t fix,

This sometimes is fixed if you install the software from scratch. So do the following:

  1. Download the latest setup file. You did not tell us which version you are using, use the right one:
    Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
    Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
    Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
  2. Download the avast unisntal utility from here : http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exe
  3. Disconnect from the internet.
  4. Uninstall version 5.1 from add/remove programs.
  5. Reboot to safe mode.
  6. Run the avast uninstall tool:
    a). Select avast 5 from the drop down menu.
    b). If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it.
    (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
    c). Click REMOVE.
  7. Restart your computer to normal mode.
    8.Install the new version using the setup file you downloaded in the first step.
  8. Connect to the internet and update to the latest antivirus database.
  9. Register if you use free, insert license key if you use pro or internet security.
