Installation error

Hi all,

For some reason Avast works for a while then simply stops working locking up my system

I get the little red circle with the line through it on the ‘On-Access Scanner’

Often a reboot cures this problem, however today it decided to knock out my LAN cards as well as my USB Sound Card.

I’ve downloaded a fresh copy (twice), but when I try to install it, I get error logs which I can’t paste here because it exceeds the max characters allowed.

Any ideas?

• Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
• What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
• Do you use a firewall? Which one?
• Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
• Any other security programs that could interfere?

Did you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

XP SP2 and no it isn’t up to date. Every time I install the updates I get the "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows\system32\config\System " message.

So I’ve given up with the updates and when I reinstall XP I just use the SP2 CD Microsoft sent to me then my system works fine.

It’s the 4,8 version on the Avast website. Haven’t a clue about the VPS number as it won’t install

It’s an ISP firewall all the computers on the WAN are hidden behind.

I’ve been through all of this myself, I’ve even deleted all the registry keys manually so the installation would be completely fresh. Avast was recommended to me by my ISP (which is a local ISP on a wireless WAN)

Did you try to repair your installation?

Yes, it said to re-install

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Did that and it came up with an error message about a corruption so the repair, install and even the uninstall wouldn’t work so I’ve had to manually remove the Avast folder although it’s not letting me remove the ashShell.dll file.

Please, try an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Then I can click next to the “I agree screen” and I click on “I agree” then next.

Then it shows the destination folder : C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4

I go to the configuration screen and keep it on “Typical”

Then I get the message:

I’ve had to completely recover my machine, (full format and re-installation) and I’m still getting the same errors even with a raw machine that only has the MB, sound & graphic card drivers installed.

I didn’t put the prog on on 2nd hard drive but downloaded it to the desk top and ran the program from there.

Are you installing Windows from a recovery CD (with some other preinstalled antivirus) or from the Microsoft CD/DVD?
Which firewall are you using?

I’ll letting it choose it’s own path which is c:/program files/Awill/avast I think.

I don’t have a recovery CD and always fresh install from an XP Pro CD as this is a custom built machine.

As for the firewall, I don’t need to use one. My ISP has a firewall which hides all the computers on the WAP network & blocks all file sharing access, (I can’t even see other computers on the WAP network), though I have enabled the Win SP2 firewall.

As for my machine, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s working perfectly except for this problem with Avast.
